Plymouthy Adams Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Ed..if car idles fine..then the idle circuits are good..if car cruises at speed then it is assumed the primary circuits are good..we have no secondary circuits in your application...so to get from the idle to the primary we have the SHOOTER or the acceleration pump..this provides the burst of fuel needed to transisition to the primary run circuits..is the shooter performing..some carbs provide different stroke holes for temperature compensation...also note that the ignition circuit will also have an effect on this as the loss of vacuum on acceleration will put the degree of advance on acceleration directly onto the swing weights...be sure your distributor is in good shape and timing is correct... Young Ed Posted November 5, 2007 Author Report Posted November 5, 2007 When I was rebuilding it I did check to make sure that the step up circuit moved freely. I suspect its probably the accelerator pump. Car ran perfectly at low speeds before the swap so I wouldn't think its anything but carb related. I didn't change anything else. I didn't even change the under carb gasket. And I did check that port in the bottom and it was clear. Quote
Young Ed Posted November 5, 2007 Author Report Posted November 5, 2007 Tim another good point I forgot to mention. The little arm under the accelerator piston was binding in the middle hole. So I had to use one of the other ones. I meant to look in my manual last night to see which of the other 2 is more appropriate to be using. Otherwise I may have to bust out the LB weld and try and reconstruct the middle hole. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Make sure your gas tank is vented. At steady high speed the fuel pump could be straining against a slight vaccuum in the tank causing a lean surge condition. I'll go back to sleep now. Quote
Young Ed Posted November 5, 2007 Author Report Posted November 5, 2007 I had thought of that before. 99% sure now with the latest carb swap that it was a carb issue. Now I just have a different carb issue. Now when I built my truck carb I messed and messed with the accelerator pump and never did get it right. I just gave up and kept driving it and it now has settled in and works fine. So any tricks to the trade or am I stuck doing that again? Quote
Young Ed Posted November 6, 2007 Author Report Posted November 6, 2007 Another item. Turns out the carb is set for high altitude or extremely hot weather. So I will switch it to the winter setting and try that. Will the winter setting work in the summer though?? Cause the summer setting in the middle is worn out. Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 6, 2007 Report Posted November 6, 2007 Ed; If anyone else but you had posted this problem I would have posted a response. You are a ZEN master and I know you would figure out what the problem was. You have my respect! Quote
greg g Posted November 6, 2007 Report Posted November 6, 2007 Grasshopper, put the link in the hole for the longest stroke. then try to keep you foot out of it....... Quote

Car starts up right away summer or dead of winter. Quote
Young Ed Posted November 6, 2007 Author Report Posted November 6, 2007 Ya the middle setting is too worn out on this carb. Throttle wont return to idle. Time will tell if you can use the winter setting in the summer Quote
Normspeed Posted November 6, 2007 Report Posted November 6, 2007 I'd go for the outermost setting. That should be the richest. You could also swap carb bases. Quote
