4 years later...I took the rear drum off. What a mess. Wheel bearing grease everywhere. I am pretty sure other side is the same. I'll take it apart as well.

The issue I was having in 2020, with the rear axle grease seals has come to fruition. @Dodgeb4ya It seems the seal is not sealing against the drum hub surface. Grease is everywhere.

I'll order these now, and get 'em on the way. Thx for the tip @desoto1939

Check the vent on the housing.  If it's plugged the grease will be forced past the seals as the rear end housing heats up and pressure builds.  When I got the P15 I replaced all the seals, bearings, shoes and cylinders on the rear.  About a year latter grease was everywhere.  Seals must have gone bad - nope - the vent was plugged.  The second time around I made sure the vent was clear.  Another year latter and all is good.

Where the seal rides on the frum hub....thst surface is slightly tapered..

Hopefully it is not too severely worn or grooved.

A very poor design IMO.

Glad they improved the design in 1946.

I don't think the surface on the rear drum is very tapered, at least not on my '33. I ended up getting speedi-sleeve on each of my rear drums to get a good surface for the seal to work on.

Also, for '33 the original leather type seals were not readily available but I was able to remove the original seals from the stamped metal carrier and find a modern seal that could be pressed into the original carriers.

I don't know the dimensions for the year in question but I suspect a similar fix and upgrade to the rear axle outer seals could work.

The slight taper was on a 34 PE I did recently and on a 36 P2 several years back.

Would have been nice to install speedi- sleeves.

Are all 1942 and back drums supposed to be straight cut?

I don't know. Maybe only the '33 is straight cut. I know the brakes on the '34 are the same size as mine but the drum part numbers are different so maybe that is the difference.
