central52 Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Where can I get a stock exhaust system for my 47 Plymouth in Connecticut? I know I can order one from Andy Bernbaum. Are these people reliable? Ed Quote
steveplym Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Andy B. is good to deal with. Purchased quite a few items from him and had good luck. If I've ever had a problem he took care of it. Kanter also has exhaust available. Looks like around $360 for mild steel. I had a local exhaust shop do mine for quite a bit less than that several years ago. May want to check around to see if someone local can help you. Quote
Mr. Belvedere Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 I would be careful using Andy B. I have read a whole lot of negative posts about that guy. Quote
oldmopar Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Give Roberts a call they are in MA http://www.robertsmotorparts.com/index.html Quote
claybill Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 birnbaum...yes lots of comments, but mostly about his attitude. it stinks! but as a business man he is ok. i have never had a problem with items or returns or anything like that. and he knows about everything. roberts is good too. knows everything..... their prices frequently vary from catalogs, outdated as new items are replaced..or more scarce..etc the only company i had trouble dealing with was ply=do. impossible! bill Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 I picked up my manifold pipe from Waldron, bought a Smithty muffler and had car x make a tail pipe. Cost for the manifold pipe was about $35, custom made exhaust pipe with chrome tip about $90 at Car X. Total cost for the whole thing was about $185. That was in 1995 or 96. Brother in law just (last week) had dual exhaust pipes custom made at another local shop for 36 Ford (he had the manifold pipes & mufflers). His cost was just a little over $200. So........check out your local shops first. Of course cost may vary depending on your location, but it's probably cheaper than ordering it all from someone. Also keep in mind, the prices I gave and others gave are also installed prices at the local shops. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Besides being cheaper or about the same the local places are easier to deal with if something is wrong. One of the mail ordered systems we used hit the frame and we were stuck fixing it our selves. I had a mail order system on my 46 that was fine though. I ended up changing the manifold for the other dump location so I had to change the front pipe out. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Some of those fellows in local muffler shops are real good at bending the pipe to just where it needs to be. And you can usualIy watch while they're doing it. I would check locally first. If you need a muffler, they may have a suitable one, depending on what type you want. Or, if you want a Smithy or Cherry Bomb, probably need to order it first. Quote
Normspeed Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 I've had mixed results with Roberts and finally stopped dealing with him. Sometimes sent wrong items, sent opened packages with stuff missing, forgot to send some items, etc. Always offered to make good on it but I had to pay the return shipping on the wrong stuff or the extra shipping for the stuff he missed the first time. When I called him, he said that once I bought something from him that it was mine...no refunds...even if the item had a malfuntion. I thought that was strange business. I've also been warned by others on here to be careful of him, but then again...he could be having a good day or bad day. Quote

Bought items when I'm guessing the dad was still around and had no issues, but after my last experience, no more. In fact, the last time I called was about an exhaust for the D24. The way he answered me, I must've been an idiot for asking him about an item he didn't have that was listed in his catalog. I went with Waldron's as well. Very happy with the fit and finish. Cost was decent, too. Would've gone to a local shop, but need something on the car just to get it running and the price difference wasn't too bad. Quote
claybill Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 ok........where and who is 'waldron's.? claybill Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 ok........where and who is 'waldron's.?claybill Bill, I think Waldron's is out of Michigan. At any rate if you have a Hemmings or Old Car's Weekly you'll find him advertising in there. Him and his wife use to have a trailer set up at the Jefferson swap meet every year too. Think he still does, haven't paid that much attention since I didn't need that now. Quote

central52 Posted September 22, 2007 Author Report Posted September 22, 2007 Thanks people for your responses for exhaust info and suppliers. I checked out Waldron's. What do you think? No. 1, aluminized pipes and muffler - $210. No. 2, stainless pipes and aluminized muffler - $310. No. 3, stainless pipes and muffler - $390. I also checked Kanter's, and they are much more expensive. Ed I think aluminized pipe will out last the rest of the car. No need to go with stainless in my opinion. I had a local shop do my dual exhaust. Cost me two bills and I supplied the mufflers. I am very happy with the results. Quote
Normspeed Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 Ed, I agree, aluminized is good stuff. Another advantage of aluminized is, if you do any mods later, like a different muffler or whatever, any shop can work easily with aluminized. Stainless, maybe harder to modify. Are you restoring, modifying..? Quote
central52 Posted September 23, 2007 Author Report Posted September 23, 2007 I'm restoring. Thanks for advice. What do you think of the advice in the Service Manual that says, "Whenever any part of the exhaust system has been replaced, leave the attaching bolts and clamps loose and run engine to allow all parts of the system to align themselves. Then, tighten all bolts and clamps securely, making sure there is no interference between the spare tire well or shock absorbers." Do you think the muffler shops do this when they install a system? Or is it really necessary? Ed Quote
Brad Lustig Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 I went with aluminized as well. I think you'll be very happy with Waldron's. Quote
Normspeed Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 Probably good advice but all the shops I've dealt with in recent years just get everything lined up and checked, then start welding. No clamps, no joints that could leak. Quote
greg g Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 I had my system bent locally from the manifold back. I had the piece that went over the rear axle so they had a templat but most places don;t need it. I used 2 inch id pipe all the way an got a Dynomax low restriction muffler that is about 2 inches shorter than the stock muffler, and mounted in the stock location, I believe that 1 paid 135 for everything. It is 5 years old and still isn't showing any rust. the sound is louder than stock but mellow. Quote
