JIPJOBXX Posted October 26, 2017 Report Posted October 26, 2017 Hello this is Jon the guy with the 1942Blackout. I recently bought a beautiful 1979 Mercury Cougar with 69,000 original miles and being it a newer car I hav question to ask any of the knowledgeable people here about fuel filters. I took out the Mercury for a test and ride yesterday and while excelerating on the freeway the car just seemed to die and stopped. I sat there for about 30 seconds and turn the key on to start the engine and it started right up. I continued with the engine running but it stalled again. So once again I restated the car and it ran good from there on but I only ecxcellerated to a point where I was going 45 or so and it ran perfectly. When I got home I bought a new filter and installed it. I noticed with the old one that by blowing through it that it did have restriction haft as much as the new one. This is where I think this is where the problem came from? The old one was not plugged up but the flow seem to be restricted. What do you think? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 26, 2017 Report Posted October 26, 2017 I think you need to run back out on the road and repeat the performance test...if it passes....what are the odds the filter change was the solution....? Quote
desoto1939 Posted October 26, 2017 Report Posted October 26, 2017 now go test the car againto see if the issue was resolved. And report back your findings Hartung Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 26, 2017 Report Posted October 26, 2017 you could still have an issue..but test this first...else how you know if it is or is not right...if not right, come back got a few suggestions for you.. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted October 26, 2017 Author Report Posted October 26, 2017 Seems to have cleared up! Thanks Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted October 27, 2017 Report Posted October 27, 2017 Didn't Ford bring out the variable venturi carbs in 82? Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted October 27, 2017 Report Posted October 27, 2017 I know they were out in 1977 . Quote
Adam H P15 D30 Posted October 27, 2017 Report Posted October 27, 2017 They were out in the late 70's. My point is if the OP changes to a Motorcraft (or equivalent) spread bore 2bbl, the car would run much better. The VV's were tempermental at best and basically garbage. Also finding someone with the knowledge and tools to set one up would be difficult. Many VV's hit my junk pile in years past... Getting a little off topic here but it probably has a severely retarded timing chain set in it. Change to an earlier timing chain and gears would wake it up. Adam 1 Quote
