Newbie here! Educate me on my 58 Dodge truck

Recommended Posts

I'm brand new here, thanks for letting me join!  I've been gifted a disassembled 58  D100 Dodge truck.  I know nothing about these trucks.  It has a 315 v8 in it.  Would this truck be considered a "pilothouse" truck.  What other names are these trucks known as? I don't know what a p15 or d24 is.  What sources are there for finding parts? Sheet metal? Rubber parts? Upgrades?  Other forums or groups? One of my first thoughts is to put a 4 BT or even a 318 into it to make parts more easily available.  What other drivetrain swaps have folks done?  I know a lot of purists hate hearing those ideas but having worked on several "rare" trucks the constant hunt for parts or fabrication gets old.  I'm this trucks chance to get back on the road and I'm not afraid to modernize for comfort and safety.... not to mention driveability.  Please respond to any or all of my questions... thanks in advance.

Welcome !   Your 58 is not a Pilot-House truck.  It's a Power-Giant Era truck 1957-1960.  The 315 was offered in the 57 and 58 models and was rated at 205 hp with the 2 bbl carb.

From looking at your front wheels your truck is a 1 ton model.

Did you get the cab forward Jeep too?

I'm thinking a 318 would be an easier upgrade than a 4BT Cummins, with more performance to boot.

As Reg stated, it appears to be a 1 ton chassis based on the front wheels. I don't believe it would be a Dana axle. I believe Dodge made their own axles back then. But I'm sure you could find a Dana that would fit and give you more modern brakes, etc.

Welcome. More pics please. :)

Looks like a great candidate for a more modern Dodge chassis swap or a very cool original 1 ton pickup.

I have a running 318 you can have. :)

The jeep FC has been discussed but I passed on it.  Finding parts would be a drag and I don't know much about FC trucks and the geometry of swapping drive lines. I love those trucks but that is someone else's dream, not mine.

as I understand the 2 headlight verse 4 headlight, the go ahead had not been given the approval by DOT for 4 headlights when gearing up and stamping parts for the 58 Dodge.....it was eventually approved and was introduced a bit later in the production of the 58 model. I also had an early 58 with the 2 headlight....

Drivetrain swaps are common and the Mopar guys will tolerate anything Mopar related but beware of any mention of gm........

The 325, if you have it, is a great engine but can be expensive to rebuild so a late 318/360 Magnum is a favorite. You will get bonus points from some folks for a B-RB swap. A 4BT would certainly be a head turner but not a stump puller. Now, if you already own one then that is a different story.

Great truck to start on! I have seen a lot of cool one tons at car shows recently!

Now as for the 315, I might know a thing or two about the cost of rebuilding one. Put it this way... I could of bought a new 6.4L Hemi crate engine from Dodge for quite a bit less than my 315 Hemi project. However, for me I am trying to shoot for period correct and am trying to clone a D500 315 Hemi. If you are not interested in period correct or staying original, a more modern 318, 340, 360 would probably be the best bang for the buck for HP and modern parts. Also, you might be able to recoup some build costs by selling the 315 poly. If you check Craigslist and eBay, they can go for a good price. They are getting pretty darn rare.

And the last of my 2 cents... stick with a Mopar engine of some sort if you decide to swap and keep the original frame.
