Iammister Posted November 14, 2016 Report Posted November 14, 2016 (edited) Well I have been lurking here for a couple of weeks and decided I better post something... I picked up a new to us car for the wife and I about three weeks ago. A 1948 Dodge Deluxe 4 door ( I think it's a deluxe). Hopefully members and others here can help as I go through my restoration... So far I have replaced the tires (new tires in pics ,needed whitewalls), new plugs, installed a Scarebird disc brake kit on front, adjusted the handbrake, and started working on correcting the paint (not gonna paint it for few years I think).. Now I'm trying to source new flat glass and rubber for same glass and installing some seatbelts so we can legally drive on freeway with the family. I am located in Northern California. Iammister Posted November 14, 2016 Author Report Posted November 14, 2016 I didn't realize my pictures were too big for the forum so have to upload somewhere else. Then I'll post more. The one pic is from when I was driving it home stopped to check tire pressure and pick up some extra fluids just in case... Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 14, 2016 Report Posted November 14, 2016 with the rear trim if factory...going to say Custom...high line if you will..... Quote
casper50 Posted November 14, 2016 Report Posted November 14, 2016 Lammister I just took my flat glass to a local auto glass place and they beat any price that I could find on line by over $100 for a 3 window coupe. I'd try local first. Rubber I just bought from http://www.oldmoparts.com/parts.aspx. I haven't received it yet so I don't know if it's a good fit or not. Quote
Iammister Posted November 14, 2016 Author Report Posted November 14, 2016 I'lL have to watch and see what you think about fitment. I was looking there for rubber but there are lots of places claim to fit and be good stuff and have seen for other cars that were totally wrong...I hope they workout so I can order from there as well I was thinking it was custom because of trim and it has electric wipers which I didn't think was offered on deluxe but still not sure. Any other way to tell for sure if it's custom or deluxe? Quote

Andydodge Posted November 14, 2016 Report Posted November 14, 2016 Welcome from downunder, these guys know their stuff..........as for where to get rubber etc, I have been dealing with Andy Bernbaum for years, generally find them to be good........I would not recommend Steele Rubber to my worst enemy..........and your local glass place should be able to cut the glass to fit............regards, andyd Quote

The car is original according to the previous two owners... Thanks Again! Edited November 14, 2016 by Iammister Mistyped Quote

Reg Evans Posted November 14, 2016 Report Posted November 14, 2016 Oh, I'm about 1.5hrs north east of you in Grass Valley. Welcome ! Quote
casper50 Posted November 14, 2016 Report Posted November 14, 2016 Looks better without the swamp cooler. Would look even better with a sunvisor. But it looks pretty good without it too. Quote
Iammister Posted November 14, 2016 Author Report Posted November 14, 2016 Yeah I will eventually pick up visor. I think the wife likes them as well. The swamp cooler came with car and is all rebuilt (new straw or whatever it is) and primered flatblack...I like it but I don't like the potential damage it does to car when installing and taking off so most likely I'll end up selling it (if she allows me to). I always wanted one (used to do Volkswagens) but it doesn't exactly streamline the vehicle... I think the car is very solid and have put about 600 miles on it since purchased. The wife drove it all day yesterday without issue and really enjoyed it. I think I want to do 12v for brighter lighting because it's pretty dim in the back...I do have turn signals which is nice but still only single brake light. 1 Quote

Welcome, and nice car... 12 volts won't necessarily make your lights brighter. 6 volt lights can be just as bright if they are getting all of the current they should be getting. Be sure the wiring is in good shape and check for good grounds throughout the car. 6 volt circuits tend to use more amperage, so any resistance, or poor connections, within a circuit will cause enough of a voltage drop to make the lights a little dim. Iammister Posted November 14, 2016 Author Report Posted November 14, 2016 Thanks Merle..I will start looking into voltage drop...is it possible the bulbs are just old and dim? If I replace be brighter? Just curious...6v positive ground is new for me...maybe there are new (led? ) bulbs that will run on 6v? Quote
busycoupe Posted November 14, 2016 Report Posted November 14, 2016 (edited) You can get 6V led bulbs to fit the tail lights and brake light. They are much brighter, although if your directionals are tied into the the tail lights led's could cause problems. .... Cleaning the ground connections and painting the inside of the light fixtures white or silver also improves brightness. The 6V led bulbs I bought work n either pos. Or neg. ground. casper50 Posted November 14, 2016 Report Posted November 14, 2016 Chrome tape inside the fixtures works quite well also. Quote
Iammister Posted November 14, 2016 Author Report Posted November 14, 2016 (edited) Awesome..thanks for info! I will look into both painting or taping the inside back of fixtures and possible led for the markers... I have run into another issue...the serial number plate on my car according to the link provided above leads me to believe my car is actually a 47! But I'm not quite sure how to read and there still isn't a letter designation identifying custom or deluxe...:( the engine block is a D24 xxx) and supposedly it's the original engine but over 68 years I'm sure a lot can happen...the serial number starts with 450xxx on plate in driver door pillar. I wish I took a picture. My spare tireis original (assumed) and is a 15 x7.10 which looks like a 48 only size for the 46-48 so I think it's a 48 but maybe serial number from different car?? Edited November 14, 2016 by Iammister Quote
casper50 Posted November 14, 2016 Report Posted November 14, 2016 to find out if the engine is original go to the drivers side rear wheel well. Take a look on the frame on the arch outside edge. Should be the VIN there and should match the engine. Quote
Iammister Posted November 14, 2016 Author Report Posted November 14, 2016 Thanks..I will look into this evening! Quote
casper50 Posted November 14, 2016 Report Posted November 14, 2016 there are two photos of location in this thread Quote
Iammister Posted November 15, 2016 Author Report Posted November 15, 2016 (edited) Ok so serial number on plate is for 1948..still not sure if it's a custom or deluxe but the year is good! Edited November 15, 2016 by Iammister Mistype...phone doesn't like me Quote
