Conn47D24 Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 Has anyone seen this before ? 1948 flathead D24 block. Seems to be a very round hole at the base of the cylinder wall. Below the stroke line. The NON - valve side of the block. I have two other blocks without this. The pistons came out in one piece, no failure there. No other damage to the walls as seen. Design change ? Part of oiling or PVC system ? Or did someone drill a hole ??? Considering purchasing this block. My shop guy said he can sleave it. But if it's a failure should we sleave all six? Thoughts please, Photos of others like it? Thanks in advance. Clay Quote
knuckleharley Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 I can't remember ever seeing anything like that before, and can't explain it. That sure is a rough looking bore, though. Is it a standard bore block? Quote
Conn47D24 Posted October 4, 2016 Author Report Posted October 4, 2016 Still waiting on measurements of the bore. I agree the lower section around the hole is rougher. Never gets easy Huh ? Clay Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 these block are just too common to worry over saving this one....make a boat anchor of it or tie your favorite pet goat to keep from wandering off and find a better candidate for building.. 1 Quote
desoto1939 Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 Clayton: I agree with Ply Adams. The hole doesn't look kosher to me either. ANd the cylinder wall is very rough and pitted. Would not waste the time on this engine, just my 25 cents on this topic. Rich Hartung 1 Quote
dpollo Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 That hole looks like the block has been bored through to the water jacket. It may have run that way for awhile until the very thin layer of metal rusted through. It's a boat anchor just as PA says. 1 Quote
