50 coupe Posted April 8, 2016 Report Posted April 8, 2016 Remind me, if I am replacing the slide switch for the dome light or installing a mechanical brake light switch, do I need a '6 Volt' switch or can I use one indicated for 12 volts? What would be the difference in construction? Quote
desoto1939 Posted April 8, 2016 Report Posted April 8, 2016 If the switch has a light on it then the 12v switch would be a dull color. It just a switch then it should not matter. It is just controlling the flow of electricity. rich hartung Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 8, 2016 Report Posted April 8, 2016 switches are rated for their ability to carry current...usually rated in wattage..this will be your prime concern Quote
dpollo Posted April 10, 2016 Report Posted April 10, 2016 The only place you are likely to run into trouble is if the switch has a circuit breaker like a windshield wiper or headlight switch. 6 volt equipment has to carry more amperage to give the same results..... volts X amperes = watts so 6 volt switches and wiring is generally heavier. Don Coatney Posted April 10, 2016 Report Posted April 10, 2016 Pictured is the mechanical brake light switch I used along with the dome light switch. I believe these switches will work well on 6 or 12 volts. 1 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 10, 2016 Report Posted April 10, 2016 switches has a voltage rating so to assure that when the contact is broken the voltage will not spark/arc across the gap and cause injury to oneself or damage to the equipment it is operating..same as for a fuse...current is current but voltage has to be within specs for safety.. dpollo Posted April 10, 2016 Report Posted April 10, 2016 that brake light switch worked well on Chevrolets for years during the 6 volt era. Quote
40plyrod Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 My 51 Chevy pickup used that style switch on 6 volts with no problems. Quote
The Oil Soup Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 Don, do you have a part # for that brake switch? Quote
1950 Special Deluxe Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 Works well on my 1950 Dodge as well. I replaced the brake pressure switch with 1'of these. Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 Don, do you have a part # for that brake switch? I do not have a part number. I bought that switch back in the 60's and did not use it until I installed it on my P-15. Quote
_shel_ny Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 (edited) I used SL130 from NAPA. $7.30 back in 2010. Had to bend the bracket to mount it. Edited April 11, 2016 by shel_ny Quote
