Remind me, if I am replacing the slide switch for the dome light or installing a mechanical brake light switch, do I need a '6 Volt' switch or can I use one indicated for 12 volts? What would be the difference in construction?

If the switch has a light on it then the 12v switch would be a dull color.  It just a switch then it should not matter.  It is just controlling the flow of electricity.

The only place you are likely to run into trouble is if the switch has a circuit breaker

like a windshield wiper or headlight switch.  6 volt equipment has to carry more amperage to

give the same results..... volts X amperes = watts   so 6 volt switches and wiring is generally heavier.

switches has a voltage rating so to assure that when the contact is broken the voltage will not spark/arc across the gap and cause injury to oneself or damage to the equipment it is operating..same as for a fuse...current is current but voltage has to be within specs for safety..

that brake light switch worked well on Chevrolets for years during the 6 volt era.

I used SL130 from NAPA.

$7.30 back in 2010.

Had to bend the bracket to mount it.
