stellarrestorations Posted February 17, 2016 Report Posted February 17, 2016 Anybody available with the parts books that could tell me if engine oil dipsticks were unique amongst all the late 40s flathead engines, or if they are the same? Wondering how wide of a search we can make. Or.........., I know someone with a '49 Dodge that needs a dipstick. Thanks, Quote
desoto1939 Posted February 17, 2016 Report Posted February 17, 2016 I have a wall mounted dip stick display with various dip sticks on it I can take a picture and post the display. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Quote
casper50 Posted February 17, 2016 Report Posted February 17, 2016 there's at least two different lengths. Quote
dpollo Posted February 17, 2016 Report Posted February 17, 2016 Dodge and Plymouth differ from Chrysler and Desoto . Prewar dipsticks on Chrysler and Desoto as well as the Canadian engine have a flare on the end of the tube which contacts a felt washer on the dipstick's upper end to keep dirt out. Post war Chrysler and Desoto and Canadian engines have a straight tube threaded at the bottom end (3/8 pipe) and the stick itself has a cap which fits over the tube. for a 49, you would be looking for the stick and tube from the 25 inch block 46 to 54. Andydodge Posted February 18, 2016 Report Posted February 18, 2016 My 41 Plymouth had a dipstick that went straight into the boss on the side of the block, was a PITA to get to, however the 230 ex airport tug engine had a dipstick with a tube that raised the dipstick about 6-8" higher and was able to be fitted to the 1941 block.........the boss on the side of both blocks was the same......andyd 1 Quote
