ssnowden
My new fuel tank just arrived from Andy Bernbaum. It's identical to the original. It feels like the same weight and the build quality looks to match the original. Of course, I'll know more when it's full of gas.
knuckleharley
Probably a Tanks,Inc gas tank. I think you are going to be very happy you bought it. By the time you paid a radiator shop to boil out your old tank, solder repairs if needed, and then coat it inside to keep it from rusting with the water that passes for gas these days, you would probably have that much in a old and patched gas tank with a coating inside that would probably start to dissolve within a few years of running ethanol in it. I even replaced the old gas line with the modern nickel copper brake lines with no seams that you can bend by hand without kinking. That way I don't have to worry about my gas line rusting inside and causing me problems. For around 30 bucks,I consider that to be cheap insurance. Make sure you replace all your rubber lines and any inline fuel filters you have with ethanol-rated rubber lines and filters. Ethanol was eat the plastic from older fuel filters like it was acid.
ssnowden
That was my thinking as well. Plus, the old tank had been patched once or twice and there was some old seam repairs and it had a good amount of rust and varnish inside. I'm replacing all the lines, filters and I also installed an electric fuel pump. Everything will be new all the way from the tank to the carb. knuckleharley
I think that is the way to go. With what it costs to have a rollback take you home these days if you break down because the filter or line is clogged with tank sealer ,it's probably even the cheapest way to go. ssnowden
That's right, and with me as the mechanic, there will be so many other reasons I'll be needing a ride home I want to eliminate as many as I can.

Bingster
I wish the catalog had photos of the tanks. They seem to be generic with no breakdown of car makes or models, just "1948 car" kind of thing. But I am impressed that the tank you got was a duplicate. What car do you have? I haven't gotten to my tank yet so I don't know what it actually looks like.
ssnowden
It's a 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe Business Coupe.
Bingster
Anybody know if the 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe Business Coupe tank number is the same as a 1948 Desoto S-11 Custom Sedan?

This way, you're more likely to get what you ordered. http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=results/category_id=68/mode=cat/cat68.htm I think it is great there is finally a nice reproduction tank for these cars.. Tanks Inc offers repop tanks for my '38, unfortunately, they are Poly tanks ('35/'36 & '37-'39 Plymouth & Dodge listed are Poly-all others are steel).....no tank you. Bingster
Wow, it really is? That's great. You know, I was especially surprised it came from AB. I saw on his web site that this tank has been upgraded in some way. That sounds promising. I'm still uncertain as to the consistent quality of their parts, or is this a bias from years past? I don't know anything about the new owner, but you can't argue with his coming out with an accurate tank like that. Plymouthy Adams is right. They offer exact repo steel tanks that are galvanized tanks for P-15's. They also offer larger than stock tanks, and poly tanks for the P-15 that fit in the stock location. I came close to buying a poly tank myself for my 51 Ford because there is never any danger of a poly tank rusting from ethanol, but my 51 is going to stay very close to original in appearance and mechanics, and a poly tank peeking out from under it just wouldn't have looked right. If I had been building a modified car,I'd have gone poly.

I didn't really start buying parts until the new owners were there. I recently ordered some distributor parts and they were NOS Auto-Lite in the original packaging in perfect condition. I see they have added some more things like body repair panels, new sill plates, disc brake kits and steering box rebuilding services. I think the Internet is saving these old Mopars. No way would I know what to do without this site and being able to find parts online.

They just buy them wholesale and resell them. Chances are they are all from Tanks,Inc because AFAIK,Tanks Inc are the only people making repo tanks for P-15's. And yes, judging from the Tanks,Inc gas tank I bought maybe 2 months ago,the quality is very high and if you buy the stock replacement gas tank it is a direct replacement for the original. All the body pads and straps fit the new tank. Edited January 9, 2016 by knuckleharley
Plymouthy Adams
regardless if Tanks is building this or not..the mere fact that they or whomever has a better looking tank along the original lines than that of a press capped jerry can with a spout screams volumes in my book..

I went many many years without ordering anything from Andy but did order a few things here lately for my coupe as I bolt it together...I spoke with the new owner/staff, inquired of possible NOS by giving a part number for cross check and was overall pleased with the fast service. The fact that the new staff recognizes that there are those that wish to upgrade and he is willing to stock and supply these items...well he is taking the initiative to guarantee parts supply for you and future sales for him. and overall promoting the Mopar toward a solid future for refurbishment....I wish him nothing but the best.
