Tatback Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 Well I took delivery of my new to me engine Friday night and spent yesterday getting it all cleaned up and sprayed down really well with PB blaster. Was told it was from a 53 Dodge 1 1/2 ton truck. Cylinder pressure is 120 on every one and oil pressure is 35. Being a truck I know right from the start I'll have to take off almost everything from the chrysler engine and swap it over. I plan on using the old carb, intake/exhaust manifolds, water pump (new one from NAPA), my new water distribution tube (brass)...kinda what caused this whole mess to begin with. I also will have to switch over the oil pan, sump, and dipstick tube. Here are all the pictures from yesterday 3 Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 Have you checked displacement on your new engine? It may be a 265 CI engine. It does appear your new engine has full flow oil filter capabilities even though it has a by pass filter currently installed. If you are interested I can let you know what is required. Quote
captden29 Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 love to have those compression numbers. capt den Quote
Tatback Posted October 26, 2015 Author Report Posted October 26, 2015 Thanks Casper, two cans of gunk, a scrub brush and a pressure washer really did the job. Capt, I'm really happy with the numbers as well. My other engine was all around the 110-120 mark before I essentially killed it. I was lucky enough to find another well running engine. Don, I have not checked the displacement yet. I'm letting soak with the PB blaster before I break anything. I do plan on checking though. I would like to switch the oil filter to the full flow filter since I have everything needed with the old engine and new filters. I've been looking though years of old posts on everything but if you could also let me know that would be very helpful. I'll never turn down advice. My biggest "fear" is pulling the old one out and figuring out how to switch in this one. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to switch out the bell housings right? I do plan on putting everything from the old one on this one (water pump, fuel pump, WDT, generator) Quote

Don Coatney Posted October 26, 2015 Report Posted October 26, 2015 Follow this link for lots of pictures. http://smg.photobucket.com/user/DonCoatney/library/Oil%20Pan/Oil%20Filter?sort=3&page=1 You will need to remove the oil pan and install a pipe plug internally in the oil passages as shown in this crude drawing. You will also need to source the filter housing as pictured below. This filter housing is the same one used on the early Hemi engines. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 A T314 is either a 236 ci or a 250 ci depending on the year. It comes in the 1-1/2 ton F series trucks. Pull the 7/16" hex plug over # 6 cylinder and check the stroke to see which engine displacement you have. Bob Quote
Tatback Posted October 27, 2015 Author Report Posted October 27, 2015 Cool, thank you dodge. This weekend I'll open it up and see what I get. The seller did say it was the 250 so thats probably what it is...but I'll measure just to be safe if I ever need to order parts. Don, I could just take all the parts off of my other engine that is still in the car couldn't I? It has the full flow filter in that one. Just take them off one by one and install each one before moving on to the next one. Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 You will not be able to use your original oil filter and oil lines as the truck block is made different in the way the oil lines and filter mount. Use a 1949-54 Chrysler/DeSoto filter housing as Don shows or full flow it as Don mentioned. The engine should be the 250 if it is out of a 1953 dodge truck. Quote
Tatback Posted October 27, 2015 Author Report Posted October 27, 2015 I'm sorry I forgot to mention, the engine in the car now isn't the original 48 Chrysler engine. I believe someone on here identified it as a 50's desoto engine... Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 27, 2015 Report Posted October 27, 2015 I believe you will have to use your existing oil pan but you may run into a dip stick placement problem. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 28, 2015 Report Posted October 28, 2015 So......this is a 25 inch long engine if going into a Chrysler?? Quote
46Ply Posted October 28, 2015 Report Posted October 28, 2015 T314 236ci or 251ci 25 inches Dodge Truck B-3-FL, B-4-FL, B-3-F, B-4-F, B-3-FA 1951-1953 That's the way I see it. Quote
fredde Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 interesting will be watching this,, I get hold of a spitfire engine 251 ( 25 ") which I'm about to check through,, Quote
Tatback Posted November 1, 2015 Author Report Posted November 1, 2015 Update time... I finally had a chance to start the tear down. Only thing that took some time was I snapped 1 water pump bolt. With a little help from a torch and a hammer I was able to get it out with vice grips. I guess I paid my dues as well with the last distribution tube since I was able to grip this one with pliers and pull it right out. Here are some pictures as well as a question. I know I need to change the front pulley, timing cover and plate so I can put the other ones one. My question is: the one on my Chrysler right now looks to have a counter balance on it and the truck one is missing that. Is there any secret or tip to put the Chrysler pulley in place of the dodge one? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 Your car uses a harmonic balancer / vibration damper with the front pulley. The truck engines don't have those fancy items. You should be able to pull them and swap them too. Merle Quote
51dodgeconv Posted November 21, 2015 Report Posted November 21, 2015 Good evening. I am looking for an engine to put in my 51 Dodge Wayfarer Roadster. I am located in South East Indiana, right near Cincinnati. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. Quote
Tatback Posted November 22, 2015 Author Report Posted November 22, 2015 What size are you looking for, The straight 6 like I have? If so, the gentleman I bought my engine from has another one for sale. Quote
Tatback Posted November 24, 2015 Author Report Posted November 24, 2015 Well yesterday I was finally able to get the "new" engine in. Also was able to bolt back on the starter, and oil pan. But when I was under the car I noticed the crankshaft was considerably different looking from my other one. Especially the large weight on the middle. That old crank had two separate middle weights, this one only has one with rounded edges. I also found this on the crankshaft and I'm wondering if anyone knows why and can tell me. It's interesting at the very least.... Quote
garbagestate 44 Posted November 25, 2015 Report Posted November 25, 2015 It's probably an id mark from what ever foundry cast the crank. Quote
Tatback Posted November 26, 2015 Author Report Posted November 26, 2015 Cool, thank you. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Thank you for all your help this year. Truly means a lot. 1 Quote
