Kw6155 Posted April 28, 2015 Report Posted April 28, 2015 I have a 1938 Dodge Brothers 5 window business coupe ....I just pulled the flathead and transmission out to do some leak repairs etc. I'm contiplating putting a hemi back in.... I've seen a few things about the 3 speed overdrive transmission and it seems they are VERY hard to find...can anyone tell me what it might be worth to sell ...or if I'm crazy for doing so.....on the side it has the following numbers: 5-28-37 T86-IP W.G. DIV. THANKS KEVIN Quote
ChrisRice Posted April 29, 2015 Report Posted April 29, 2015 (edited) The transmission is a T86 manufactured May 28, 1937. I belive it is a Borg-Warner overdrive transmission, and sells for anywhere from about 150 and up. Depends on the condition, etc. Someone rebuilding a 38 Dodge back to factory specs may very well pay a premium. Here are a few links that show you a range of what people are asking (again they are asking this, doesnt mean people are paying it). $99... http://www.ebay.com/itm/171763703480 $1,350 http://www.ebay.com/itm/351325349801 Edited April 29, 2015 by ChrisRice Quote
Reg Evans Posted April 29, 2015 Report Posted April 29, 2015 The 38 had a floor shifter. Those appear to be column shifters. Quote
plyroadking Posted April 29, 2015 Report Posted April 29, 2015 I also am a little confused, is it an R-6 out of a mid-late 30's Chrysler or Desoto? Those were floor shifts, or is it a ford unit that someone adapted to an early trans? A picture would be beneficial. Quote
greg g Posted April 29, 2015 Report Posted April 29, 2015 Check out the blog section for a primer on Mopar o/D's. If you are going for a later hemi the A 883 o/d is what you might want to look for. The are a 4 speed that the gears were changed on so that Third is 1 to1 and fourth is over driven. Thses came in volares aspens and pick ups and vans in the late 70's early 80's. They came in cast iron and aluminum case and long and short tail shafts. Make sure you get the shifter as it was a purpose built Hurst unit. I believe the o/d was 0.73. Quote
casper50 Posted April 29, 2015 Report Posted April 29, 2015 I believe he's trying to find out how much his old one is worth to sell. Quote
Captain Neon Posted April 29, 2015 Report Posted April 29, 2015 I believe he's trying to find out how much his old one is worth to sell. ...or if anyone here would be willing to pay too much for it. Quote
Ulu Posted April 30, 2015 Report Posted April 30, 2015 Price is sorta regional. Locally, these were going for $150+ some 25 years ago. I'd imagine a good one would bring at least $300 around here now. But fixing old cars is very popular here (as it is in Phoenix) so prices are high here too. The same trans might bring far less $ in other cities. Quote
