casper50 Posted February 5, 2015 Report Posted February 5, 2015 When I bought my car it didn't have a dipstick or tube. I bought one off of ebay and it does screw into the dipstick hole but I'd have to put 15 quarts of oil in the engine to get it to register on the dipstick. The dipstick hole is threaded so I assume some kind of tube is needed. Anyone have a good photo of a 46-48 230 flathead with dipstick in it? Tks. Quote
desoto1939 Posted February 5, 2015 Report Posted February 5, 2015 are you sure about the number of quarts being 15? rich hartung Quote

casper50 Posted February 5, 2015 Author Report Posted February 5, 2015 rich I know it doesn't take 15 quarts. The tube is so long that the end of the dipstick is just below the top of the oil pan. Quote
Solution casper50 Posted February 5, 2015 Author Solution Report Posted February 5, 2015 thanks PA. seems that even though the hole is threaded I don't need a tube. Just put the dipstick in. If I do that it should be the correct length. Tks. Quote
Reg Evans Posted February 5, 2015 Report Posted February 5, 2015 I have a 42, 48, and 53 230 here and none have a tube. Quote
casper50 Posted February 6, 2015 Author Report Posted February 6, 2015 Frank and Reg is the tube hole threaded? Quote
DonaldSmith Posted February 6, 2015 Report Posted February 6, 2015 The 53s might take 15 or so quarts of motor oil, if they have the semi-automatic transmission. For that year, the engine oil was shared with the fluid coupling, or torque converter, whichever it was. For 54, they thought better of it. Quote
Andydodge Posted February 6, 2015 Report Posted February 6, 2015 (edited) I have seen both tube and no tube on these engines...........my 1941 Coupe with the stock 201 did not have a tube, the very short dipstick went straight into the block, however the 230 Industrial engine I had that was slated to be done up and installed in the coupe came with a dipstick that had a tube about 6-8" long from memory and was a press fit into the 230 block, I compared the holes in both engines and the markings on both dipsticks and swapped the tube and longer dipstick into the 201 engine, it was a tight press fit and made checking the oil level a much less messy affair........and I distinctly remember that the tube was a press fit into the 230 block and was installed into the 201 the same way, it was a "firm" fit so I remember putting some adhesive or something lightly around it and it was fine, definitely not a "screw in"...........both engine & car sold now so no pics .........andyd Edited February 6, 2015 by Andydodge Quote
