48ratrod Posted August 30, 2014 Author Report Posted August 30, 2014 Check also for a possible exhaust restriction. A clogged muffler, kinked pipe or a heat riser stuck in the closed position could produce the symptoms you are experiencing. John R The paper element you pictured looks new. Was it recently replaced possibly with one not as tall as the old one? Clean/replace your spark plugs and try running the engine with the top of the air cleaner removed. John ... thanks - going to explore all options ! Don - Thanks again - Re the filter - it was replaced with everything else a couple of months ago when brought out of storage. I will pick up new plugs again ... wish I had that plug cleaner I saw you posted ... thanks gents ! Quote
Don Coatney Posted August 30, 2014 Report Posted August 30, 2014 Plug cleaner I bought from JC Whitney. Quote
DonaldSmith Posted August 30, 2014 Report Posted August 30, 2014 It seems to me that the problem with the air cleaner is not the lid, which keeps air from short-circuiting directly into the carb, but how the air is supposed to get through the perimeter of the filter from the outside. Is the cylindrical body open at the bottom? How much space is between the perimeter of the filter and the cylindrical body? Quote
48ratrod Posted August 30, 2014 Author Report Posted August 30, 2014 (edited) when I get out there today… I'll take a photo of the cylindrical base FYI - but it's a solid plate on the bottom - except of course for the air intake to the carb. the filter since solidly on top of the base. I understand now what you and Don are saying regarding the air filter… Just not sure how it's managed to function as it has this long being this way. cheers ... DLK Posted August 30, 2014 Report Posted August 30, 2014 okay and update on what I believe the problem is… Today I tested the vacuum advance with a vacuum pump-found it wasn't holding any pressure at all… Seems to be a good explanation - Going to have to find me one - SUGGESTIONS on where to look?? None of the local sources here seem to have one - Re the plugs ... changed them out when was initially getting it going after being in storage ... those were champion - seemed ok and didn't have any complaints - ones I put in now though are Autolite thanks everyone for your help and assistance so far-much appreciated! Roberts and Bernbaum also have them. I have one on order from Roberts - they have a core charge - either you send yours in or pay a core fee. As bad as my car is stumbling on acceleration I have my doubts this is the only issue but my diaphragm definitely is shot. I also switched my plugs from Champion to Autolite 303's but am not sure that made any difference. Quote

Jeff Balazs Posted August 30, 2014 Report Posted August 30, 2014 Here is a couple of items to consider. If you have a vacuum leak at the distributor it may be a tear and gets worse under acceleration. Try blocking it off and see if that makes a difference. The other thing I would look at is the leather seal on the accelerator pump. If it has been sitting dry for any length of time it would probably be a good thing to give it a soaking in oil. Purevil Posted August 30, 2014 Report Posted August 30, 2014 The Auto-lite plugs should be 306, Champion plugs should have been 592, You may be running the plug in the wrong heat range causing the to foul out. The other possibility is that the Auto-lite 303 is listed for the early 60- early 70 gm vehicles (12volt systems) so it may be a resistor type plug which would require more voltage from the coil to fire properly. Plymouthy Adams Posted August 30, 2014 Report Posted August 30, 2014 at the 1000 to 5000 range of most resistor plugs..this is not enough to cause significant firing problems...and unless you have really upped you CR...no real need to alter from your stock plug or air gap.. 1 Quote

Base is solid - but between the lid and the side of the base is about a 3/8" gap around around the base - I know the filter that I replace recently was certainly dirty so its been working on some level - and hadn't noticed any disruption in engine function as a result. 48ply1stcar Posted May 31, 2018 Report Posted May 31, 2018 Did you ever figure out what caused the bogging upon acceleration? Quote
