Joe Flanagan Posted August 12, 2014 Report Posted August 12, 2014 I've been taking the Plymouth out every day now for longer runs to see how she does and to allow any problems to show up. Today I got it out on a deserted road and got it up to 50 MPH. It was very smooth and quiet. It seemed like I could have gone faster without any trouble. I have an overdrive but I have not connected the power to it. I just wanted to make sure my basic setup was going to work before I got into all that. Anyway, the temp stays steady at about 180. My charging system is perfectly normal now. Oil pressure is 60 when I have the car up to speed. This seemed kind of high to me but after reading some older posts it seems like it's OK. Any opinions on this? It's remarkably quiet inside the car. I did put insulation on the ceiling and in the doors, so guess that helps with the sound. The gear shift is pretty sticky and I think I have to make further adjustments to the selector. Not having a working turn signal indicator on the dash is driving me nuts. I read some old posts about that and it seems like it's a pretty common problem. I do have working directionals front and back, my brake lights work, and all I need is one more 6v double filament bulb and I'll have the center light on the trunk acting as a brake light as well. I have to bleed the brakes one more time and adjust the push rod at the master cylinder, but otherwise, I'm very pleased with the way this car performs. 3 Quote
DJ194950 Posted August 12, 2014 Report Posted August 12, 2014 There should be and turn signal indicator green light just to the left of the red hi beam indicator on the dash above the speedo. According the 49-50 wiring diagram it should have a white wire from the "p" terminal of the flasher to the bulb. Ground? Bulb? wiring? It will flash green when turning left or right with the turn unit is on. Kind of diff. as no left/right difference, but you will get used to it. At least a reminder when you forget the turn signal on! DJ Quote
Young Ed Posted August 12, 2014 Report Posted August 12, 2014 Joe my signals are aftermarket but I've had a lot of issues with the new 6v flashers. They would do exactly what you have-work outside but no interior indicator. Eventually they would die completely. I am now running used ones I got out of junked cars and they seem to work much better. Quote
greg g Posted August 12, 2014 Report Posted August 12, 2014 congrats Joe. Time to upgrade your profile pic, and data. 1 Quote
Niel Hoback Posted August 12, 2014 Report Posted August 12, 2014 This is no joke. A very good quality 6 volt flasher is used on older Trabants and VWs. They aren't too hard to find from specialty dealers and foreign car swap meets. I have my own secret, private supplier. European members will know to get IFA parts. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted August 12, 2014 Report Posted August 12, 2014 The 6 volt T/S flashers currently sold are All Chinese crap assembled by poor families three year old chinese children. These new ( all over Ebay and everywhere else) flashers might work properly if Tammy Faye Baker blesses you and your vehicle. They do not work correctly all the time and cause weird T/S problems. Don't buy or use them.... IMO! I posted about this a couple years ago on T/signal issues. Bob 1 Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted August 12, 2014 Author Report Posted August 12, 2014 I checked the flasher at one point and had power coming from the terminal that goes to the pilot light but it was really weak. I've got another flasher on order from Brillman Electric but that's where I got the first one. Niel, IFA parts, you say? Quote
Niel Hoback Posted August 12, 2014 Report Posted August 12, 2014 IFA Eisenach. Out of business now but the parts are still around. Quote
1940plymouth Posted August 12, 2014 Report Posted August 12, 2014 Joe, we need photos of your outings PLEASE. I am so pleased that you are getting to enjoy her. I have aftermarket signal lights and switch that were installed by the original owners. I have had to replace the bulbs, but the switch is the original one they installed Quote
Jim Yergin Posted August 12, 2014 Report Posted August 12, 2014 That's great news Joe. Two questions for you: 1. How are your Frickin wipers working in the rain we are having? 2. Where in Northern Virginia did you find a deserted road? Jim Yergin 1 Quote
Mark Haymond Posted August 12, 2014 Report Posted August 12, 2014 I am pleased to read you are getting to take it out on shake down runs. That is a fun process after a lot of work on a car. I do not have a turn signal light on the dash either, and sometimes I can not hear the flasher click, so I end up driving several blocks with the flasher on. I wish I could find a flasher that is louder than the one I have now. Quote

Where in Northern Virginia did you find a deserted road? Jim Yergin Very Funny, "Where in Northern Virginia did you find a deserted road?" Joe, I'm glad you are finally getting to drive your old Plymouth. It's an even nicer feeling when it becomes a reliable second car. Jumping in the old girl without thinking about fixing or testing something is ideally where you will eventually get to. Oh! happy days... Chet... 1 Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted August 12, 2014 Author Report Posted August 12, 2014 Jim, I was on Eisenhower Avenue about mid-day. Not many cars around for some reason. And I've got it put away and covered during this rain we're having. Bob, I will take some pictures and post them. Right now I'm busy listening for every bump, scrape, rattle, and vibration--of which there really aren't any so far. Chet, I know what you mean about being able to jump in the vehicle and just drive. That's where I am with my 56 Chevy pickup. I know that whenever I get in it, it's going to start and never give me any trouble. I feel like I can go anywhere at any time in that thing. The verdict is still out on the Plymouth. So far, I'm impressed but you never know what might be lurking around the corner. I was wondering about my rebuilt ball and trunnion U-joints, half suspecting that I might get some vibration from them, that they might be out of balance, etc. But so far, all is smooth and quiet. My next post might be the sound of the other shoe dropping, though. 1 Quote

DJ on my 51, the light gives one flash only and thats it, no reminder flashing steadily, just one flash when you turn it on, also, when I was a kid I remember the metallic clinking noise of the flasher unit, this one is whisper quiet.
