USMC1188 Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 I am still a little ways away, but what oil/fluids do you use in your cars? Engine, Trans, Diff, Coolant, etc Just trying to get different opinions, experiences, etc. Anyone use synthetic? Quote
greg g Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 (edited) Here is an item that has been much discussed and ther should be several threads revealed by using the search function. Try that, It depends on engine condition, folks run everything from straight 30 non detergent up through and multi viscosity including synthetics. Edited June 17, 2014 by greg g Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 Bottom line is run what makes you feel good as the engine does not care. 1 Quote
captden29 Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 I just switched to synthetic in my 54 Windsor. I use dex 3 in the power steer and trans. everything seems to work well. dot 4 in the brakes. 90w in the rear. capt den Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 your question does not fully express your concerns and must ask if you are talking brand name or grade/weight??? Quote

I may be wrong. My engine is a never rebuilt 230 with 80,000 miles in a 1950 Dodge Meadowbrook. I have a 1940 vintage R7 Overdrive transmission. Engine: Valvoline 20W50 Racing non synthetic, why? Because it claims to have the proper amounts of zinc for flat tappet cams and since the car was designed for a 30 weight, I feel that a 20W50 fits the bill as it is a bit thinner cold and a bit thicker hot than 30 WT. I used to use non detergent 30 weight, but decided that since my vehicle was used somewhat regularly throughout its life, it had a steady diet of whatever oil was available, so it was certainly detergent. I also pulled the pan to replace the seal and it was black but not much sludge at all. We'll see what happens. Transmission: My original 3 speed manual called for 10W oil. But the overdrive uses 15W40 Amsoil per the builder's recommendation. Diff, I use hypoid 80W90 Fluid drive coupling, I don't mess with, has original oil in it. 1 Quote

USMC1188 Posted June 18, 2014 Author Report Posted June 18, 2014 (edited) You guys got it, I was going a different route than the normal, what should I run question. I am purely wanting to know what brand and weight you run in each hole and why. I am an Amsoil dealer, so therefore will be running Amsoil in everything, this will just allow me to figure out what my best options are to cross reference to the Amsoil for my car. That, and I was just curious what the popular oils were around here, as it seems to be different with each forum/vehicle. Edited June 18, 2014 by USMC1188 Quote
kented Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 Now we've all been involved in your little focus group where's our free Amsoil Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 18, 2014 Author Report Posted June 18, 2014 Haha I would LOVE to do that, trust me! I would go broke REALLY fast though if I did that. Most of my customers are diesel pickups currently, so big filters and 11-15 quarts of oil each... my finances wouldn't last too long... Quote

I'm not a dealer, but I run Amsoil in everything I have, including the Ol' Dodge ('50 B2C 3/4 ton truck) I run 10W-40 Premium Protection Motor OIl (AMO) in the engine, and I believe the trans (4 speed spur gear) and diff have 75W-90 Long LIfe Gear Lube (FGR) Quote
Tusler 49 New Yorker Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 In my experience it really does not matter what you run for oil. What matters is what kind of driving you do and where you drive. I drive alot on desert roads in hot summer so I change my oil frequently. The object is to keep clean oil in the engine. When the oil gets dirty...change it. No matter what oil you use it will get dirty... Dirt is what kills the bearing surfaces!! 1 Quote
