Young Ed Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 Here's a pic of my car the day I bought it. The door looks to be the same as yours. Probably just conserving paint by not painting where the door panel would cover it. Quote
greg g Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 be careful of those rocker mouldings the thick ones layed across your seats. they are rear in good condition and hard to replace if damaged especially passenger side ones as they get gnarled up by parking adventures, etc. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 It appears the unit just under the dash that contains knobs and the ignition switch is painted (a Spec Dlx would be chrome), and I think you are right about the arm rests........or there may have been only one, on the driver's door - don't recall which. A parts manual would tell you how many arm rests were used on which models. It seems the Deluxes had a three point star on the inside door panel as trim. Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 18, 2014 Author Report Posted June 18, 2014 (edited) Here's a pic of my car the day I bought it. The door looks to be the same as yours. Probably just conserving paint by not painting where the door panel would cover it. Awesome, that helps a lot! So it looks like my original color may be the grey. So now it's got me wondering... was the primer they used from the factory red? Kinda cool! be careful of those rocker mouldings the thick ones layed across your seats. they are rear in good condition and hard to replace if damaged especially passenger side ones as they get gnarled up by parking adventures, etc. Roger that! Before we move the car Saturday, I am going to pull everything out and put it in the bed of my truck so it isn't damaged in transport. Then the car is going to the power washer to get rid of 40 years of dust and grime. After that, she can go into her new home. It appears the unit just under the dash that contains knobs and the ignition switch is painted (a Spec Dlx would be chrome), and I think you are right about the arm rests........or there may have been only one, on the driver's door - don't recall which. A parts manual would tell you how many arm rests were used on which models. It seems the Deluxes had a three point star on the inside door panel as trim. Yep, makes sense. The original door panels are in the back seat, so I will have to look closer at them and see if they have arm rests or not, but I do not think they do. My car actually still has the Deluxe badges as well on the fenders, which seems to be an easily lost part on a lot of cars. The 48's new home is cleaned out! We worked on it another 3 hours or so tonight, so she is ready to be moved this weekend! I can't wait! Edited June 18, 2014 by USMC1188 Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 Has this car been stored in Ohio? If so where? I used to live about 125 miles north of Hamilton. In 1969 I bought a new BSA 3 cylinder motorcycle from a dealer in Hamilton. Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 18, 2014 Author Report Posted June 18, 2014 (edited) Yes it has. The car was originally my great grandparents car and was owned by them until the early/mid 70s, and since then has been stored in the garage behind my grandmother's house. Her house, and the car is on the west side of Hamilton. Small world, that is pretty awesome! Edited June 18, 2014 by USMC1188 Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 The primer on my 49 Special Deluxe was red. The same color as what you and Young Ed show in your pictures. Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 18, 2014 Author Report Posted June 18, 2014 That's good to know! Confirms that question I think, thanks! Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Report Posted June 19, 2014 The wheels are done! I have one center cap finished and painted as well. I think the combination will look awesome on the car! I am having tires put on them tomorrow once the paint has some time to dry. 1 Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 My opinion, if the wheels were done they would not be red Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Report Posted June 19, 2014 Haha, we will see how it looks installed. I have decided to go for a 50's hot rod look, and the bright colored wheels were popular. It is only paint, so if I decide that I don't like it down the road, I can easily redo it. I only did it now because it gave me something fun to do while I wait to pick up the car itself. Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Report Posted June 19, 2014 White walls too? I am just putting crap used tires on it for now to get it out of the garage and moved around. But once it comes time to put good tires on it and get the car out onto the road, it is definitely getting whitewalls! It's the only way to go! Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Report Posted June 19, 2014 Good plan From your profile picture to the left, it looks like your car is lowered. How did you go about doing that? I have found some information and ways to do it, I was just curious on your experience and real world knowledge. Quote
kented Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 Ive got a build thread of some sorts on here but heres another angle Car has 1 coil chopped from the front and lowering blocks in the rear, cant remember the size off hand 1 Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Report Posted June 19, 2014 Awesome, that is exactly the stance I am looking for! Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Report Posted June 22, 2014 Well, she is finally out of her 40 year slumber! Newly painted wheels with junkyard tires on and ready to go. SHE'S OUT!!! Loading it up! We didn't come very prepared... so we used ratchet straps and a come-along to get it on. Took some time, but we got it! Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Report Posted June 22, 2014 Bath time Just a couple good shots of it all: Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Report Posted June 22, 2014 Backed up to her new home: Pile of spare parts! Tucked in and cozy! Quote
OldDad67 Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 Backed up to her new home: Pile of spare parts! Tucked in and cozy! Now the fun begins!!!!! Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Report Posted June 22, 2014 Now the fun begins!!!!! Yep, I can't wait! I think we are going to strip the interior soon so my wife can start planning it out. Then I am going to start working on front suspension and brakes.... only one problem, the hood is jammed shut, and I can't open it back up. May be a dumb question, but where is the hood release? Quote
soth122003 Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 Try looking between the emergency brake handle and the door jam. That's where mine is. Nice car and welcome to the forum. Quote
USMC1188 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Report Posted June 22, 2014 I will check there, thanks! There are 2 things right there under the dash, so I will give it a shot. When the hood slammed shut (it's been open for years), it shut weird too. The hood almost looks like its forwards of where it's supposed to be. Quote
soth122003 Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 The carpet definitely has to go... my aunt made an attempt in the early 70s to get it back on the road, so she started adding stuff to it... so the ugly blue shag carpet is her fault... Any idea or advice on where to get a replacement carpet? Check out this site for carpet. http://www.carparts.com On another note, You painted your tires. Looks good. Make sure you painted the inside good, due to the rivets you could loose air through them. Also check this out for the balance procedure when you get your new tires. ( I ordered mine from wal-mart for $250.00 for a set of 4) http://www.innovativebalancing.com/Classicchart.htm http://aircooledtech.com/tools-on-the-cheap/balancing_beads/ Check out this vid on you tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq263AYgyYg That's how I did my car tires on my P-15. The tires look good and there are no ugly balance weights. Quote
