I remember when I finally tackled my brake system, the owner of my local NAPA store chuckled when I came in for my first replacement brake line. His exact words were you`ll be back for more and he was right, I eventually changed them all. I tried to rebuild a NOS master I had and it lasted about two weeks and then I finally put in a new Cardone master. One of the biggest differences was noticed when I replaced the brake return springs, the old ones were stretched out and very tired

I have posted a picture of master cylinder 1-1/8" rear cup being wrong-too wide and can block the relief port.

You cannot use a regular common wide wheel cylinder cup in a master cylinder as it will block the hole.

A proper narrower width cup must be used as what comes in a master Cylinder Kit.

NOTE: Chinese kits probably come with who knows what.

Dodgeb4ya,

Do you happen to have the dimensions of the two cups? I would think that would help to determine if the cup is too long.

It looks like that was the answer to my problem. The cup being too long really seemed to fit with what was happening inside the master cylinder, so I went on a mad search through all my spare parts and couldn't believe my luck when I found a rubber cup for a 1 1/8" master cylinder AND it was shorter than the one I was currently using. I put the shorter one in and it seems to have solved the problem. Today I put about fifteen miles on the car with no brake problems whatsoever. I did a couple of panic stops and locked the wheels up, so they're working. When I got home, I jacked it up and was able to spin the wheels freely by hand. I've got fluid coming up through the relief port, which is now clear. I guess time will tell whether or not the problem is taken care of, but right now it seems like it is.

That's terrific Joe. I've got to think you have solved your frustrating problem. What a great resource this forum is with the information graciously provided by Dodgeb4ya.

unbelivable ! ...    as much as possible i buy NOS parts !! and i know why now !!

NOS hard parts should be good to go. But NOS soft parts (60 year old rubber) I would not trust especially on something as critical as brake parts.

Congratulations of having your perseverance rewarded.  15 miles and a safe return to home base.  That post from Dodgebe4you should go up on the tech section as a sticky under brakes.

I thought everything is made in China...So where do I find a new, not 60 year old, 'made in America' kit?  The Raybestoes MK143 kit I have doesn't say where it was made!

Whew!!!! I finally,,,, maybe helped get one issue solved! ;)

Joe and Jim I hope this is the final fix! I too have run into hanging dragging brakes  on 1946-54 MoPar jobs  A pain for sure.

Jim, I took that picture last June and since have moved all my brake parts-not in a good way- a big jumble mess right now,  so I do not have the cups quickly at hand. But it sounds like Joe does or did.

I will try to dig through mine to get a measurement.

ptwothree, Some of the China stuff will work. You just have to check it out carefully for fit and quality.

Bob, I never expected to find the right sized cup. But I have a big coffee can full of miscellaneous parts that I keep telling myself I'm going to organize some day. I found it in there. But you may recall that every time I pushed a wire down into the relief port, I hit something rubber and it was that too-big rubber cup. If I pushed with the wire I could even get it to flex a bit and fluid would rush up into the reservoir through the relief port. Thanks again for posting that picture.
