Anyone ever try a 4x4 T5?

I believe my rear diff is 3:55 and my speedo is now within 1-2 mph with my T5..... I'm guessing I need to snap up some Canadian T5's and start shipping them south! I paid $80 for mine

you know..it makes no sense to me whatsoever that the local yard being full of 4 x 4's would have such a cheap price on the trannies as these would be the very article that would be in demand...and for sure enough of these do go bad from what I have read...in this neck of the woods 4 x 4 is the premium...

I do have one sitting around but I dont have a means to weigh it. Last time I picked it up it felt heaver than when I parked it under my bench 8-9 years ago.

I have the same problem. Everything I store under the bench does that.

It must be some kind of magnetic field in the cement floor or something.

I suppose I ought to clarify a tad, I'm kind of on a first name basis with the yard owners, so I tend to get pretty fgood deals from them. As for explaining the trannies, the 2 4x4 transmissions are from 80s s10s with blown up 2.8s, they said they have taken in around 50 over the years for blown motors. Remarkably there are no 2wd ones there though, so that kinda explains my supply. Fyi, nobody really likes the s10 around here for whatever odd reason, its all about either jeeps or jacked up compensators.

S10 not being liked...load them with only 1/2 their cargo and try to stop..brakes were pathethic...add hills into the equation...you rolling death to yourself or some unfortunate road traveler

lack of 2wd t-5s and abundance of 4wd versions up here is really not surprising. Almost everything that could come with 4wd does simply because employers expect their workers to show up regardless of the weather. If you're from an area does not need the 4wd, the 2wd may be more predominant and be more available for picking.

I just used a bathroom scale first set to my weight to match the dr.'s office scale and added 10lb. to make sure I was covered when shipped. Came within a buck or two after cheaking shipping online prices.

 

I use my motor hoist a lot to lift heavy pieces and neighbors , friends to help get them further than the hoist will do.

Couldn't get some things done without help, I thank them daily for the help I recieve!

Don, S10 5 speed with Mechanical speedo run for about $700- 750  in my area.   When I call wrecking yards they swear they have them but when I arrive they are electrical speedo.

 

I was looking at some of your work on the T5 install.  what cluctch do you use ?   Im assuming you used the same pressure plate?

 

 

Do you want to trade a T5 speeds for a 727 tranny with a flathead adapter?  ..  LOL  cheers!   The engine and extra parts look great.

I just picked up an S10 T5 off an an V6 truck 1985-1986  manual speedo and 3.86 first gear.  Locally here in Los Angeles for   $400

And so it begins...

I dropped by the yard this evening and grabbed:

s10 T5

Dana 20 transfer case

spare transfer case for parts

3 beer boxes

a really crappy old shirt (all to save my roommate's trunk)

 

All of this was $100, so I can experiment and sell parts off if it doesn't work

Is anybody interested in me posting pics when I get to playing with this or should i save the forum's space?

UPDATE:

So I got the parts home and tore into them, that tranny was shot. Really I should have known that since I couldnt move anything on it, but it turned out to be full of ice, plus all the bearings are shot! So much for a good tranny! Plus as it turns out, somebody went into one of the transfer cases (the dana 18 for parts) and stole the high gear out of it, and then put it back together! It's sad, this was out of the yard owner's personal truck. Evidently this isn't the first time this kind of crap has happened. But the positives: I have successfully assembled a 2wd T5 from the good parts in that one, plus I now have a good and complete dana 20 sitting around if anybody's interested.

Now if I ever get the rest of the stolen parts, this may come back again!

Scored,,,I put a wanted add on CL a man called me last night about 6 said he had one $150:00 2 hours away. I jump in the truck and was home by 10 with it. That might be a good way of getting one let them come to you. Just a thought I wanted to pass on to help..
