A local 50's auto yard has a bunch of OD's but he doesn't know how to identify the Mopar units. "He" bought the business thus is not fully knowledgeable on all he has.

Question: Is there an identification number that is specific to these transmissions or other distinguishing identification mark(s)?

The brake drum on the back, a short tailshaft, and the r10 cast on the od case is what i ask people to look for

The 2 Od r-10's i've had both have- R-10-G cast into the cast case

I have posted the question on several old mopar forums if the "G" was mopar only? No answers! The Chev. R-10 trans I bought had a differant letter after the R-10, but forget what, it's in storage now.

There were still   R-10'-G 's built to fit fluid drives--longer imput shafts? -Shorter tailshaft?  Differant #'s somewhere?

Check input shaft lenght, diameter, overall lenght, drive shaft connection.

Hope he has one to fit!!

Overdrive question: I have located an overdrive part # 1450343. I'm told it was for the P 22 and P 23 Plymouth. Will it fit most any 52 - 56 Plymouth flat head three speed tyranny?

It's probably a later model R-10, which means that you have to have the entire overdrive/transmission assembly, you can't add to overdrive pieces to a standard transmission.  The tranny case and some of the internals are modified so that shifting into reverse will automatically lock out the overdrive.

Yes, sort of, when I sold that one to you, my convertible, in storage, has a hy-drive and I didn't think I wanted one in my truck. Well since then I decided to fix the suburban for myself rather than make it into a surfer's wagon and I will put an OD in that. I will find another so not to worry. I just hope yours is a good one.

I call it the yin and yan of an old car hobby. When I want a car that I'm not going to change I will buy a new one.

Well I know they are out there, but it's wondering when one will come along. Around here old Plymouths don't seem to survive very well. If I get a tip on one I'll be sure to let you know.
