Jim Yergin Posted August 3, 2013 Report Posted August 3, 2013 Have not had a chance to drive my '41 any long distance since the Explorer rear axle replacement and the George Asche synchros repair. Yesterday I drove the car to Richmond, 220 miles round trip. Car ran great. No problems at all. The transmission shifted smoothly and the Explorer rear disc brakes improved the braking. An added benefit to the new rear end was the change from my original 4:3 rear to the 4:1 means my speedometer is now spot on, according to my GPS. These cars are sure fun when they are running right. Plymouthy Adams Posted August 3, 2013 Report Posted August 3, 2013 the hard work paying you back with some good dividends and that is always good news...did you notice any marked improvement in fuel economy? Quote

Jim Yergin Jim,are you sure that's a 4:10 rear? Seems like most people say they switch to Explorer rears to get ratios in the high 2's or low 3's. I do NOT doubt you know what you are talking about. I doubt that I know what I thought I "knew" and am asking for verification. Edited August 3, 2013 by knuckleharley Quote
Jim Yergin Posted August 3, 2013 Author Report Posted August 3, 2013 (edited) Yes, I verified the ratio off the code on the donor car door plate and confirmed by the tag on the differential. I had to search a bunch of cars because most were the ratios you mentioned. I wanted the 4:1 because of my overdrive . Jim Yergin Edited August 3, 2013 by Jim Yergin Quote
Chester Brzostowski Posted August 4, 2013 Report Posted August 4, 2013 Hi Jim, Congratulations on the long trip. You sure have done a lot of nice modifications. These improvements should make you feel very comfortable when on a long highway drive. Chet... Quote

Frank Elder Posted August 5, 2013 Report Posted August 5, 2013 Nice to hear your mods worked well for you....seems like you've had quite a few set backs over the last 3 years or so, glad to hear this is no longer the case! Side note, do the woodies creak, groan, squeak, pop, ....etc much??? I like the look...couldn't deal with too much racket though. Quote
pflaming Posted August 5, 2013 Report Posted August 5, 2013 There are two incidents that will remain in my mind for a long time. The first was when my truck engine STARTED! It was the first engine I brought back to life. The second was the return trip from the famous BBQ. THe final stretch was a hundred and twenty miles down the freeway at night! I locked my right foot and let that engine run long and steady. MUSIC, who needs a radio in these cars? Enjoy the car, it's a beauty. 1 Quote
