THRobinson Posted July 26, 2013 Report Posted July 26, 2013 Saw a post for a '47 P15 asking the same thing but, I have a Dodge that needs plugs and not sure if looking at the correct info or not but this site shows Autolite A5 for plugs, I believe the other post stated A7. I have a '47 Dodge Sedan, been searching online for a cross reference chart but keeps saying that the A5 isn't valid. Not many auto shops around here so likely ordering online... looking for something cheap though since, no idea if this thing will even turn over. Anyone have a link to a cross-reference chart? or just happen to know what works as a replacement? or maybe I'm looking at the wrong plugs? I have a Dodge inline 6 engine, so, assuming the above link is the same engine...? Thanks Quote

greg g Posted July 26, 2013 Report Posted July 26, 2013 Based on post count not time. Ac 45, 46, 47, Champion J 8. cross to that Auto lite number For the AC the # indicated a heat range so cold normal and hot. I believe Champs ar 8, 11, 12. Quote

THRobinson Posted July 27, 2013 Author Report Posted July 27, 2013 Funny, that first link was the last link I tried before I gave up and came here. Says no match. :S I'm pretty new to cars, been learning as I go, sadly, bought the Dodge as a project but either have the time and no money, or the money and no time. That being said, I always assumed plugs were simply different sizes bases on thread and length, so not sure what numbers I should be looking at. So, Autolite A5... 5 is for temp rating? ...is a higher/lower number better? Champion J8C I found shows the same details, just heat rating 8 vs 5 Type: Standard 14mm Thread Size 9.5mm (3/8") Reach 13/16" (20.6mm) Hex Size Gasket Seat Non-Resistor Copper Core Heat Range 8 Quote

THRobinson Posted July 27, 2013 Author Report Posted July 27, 2013 Actually, found this, missed it before, not in a good spot to find on their site but... clicked '47 Dodge Deluxe, gave 2 options... in the specs I had in my OP, the plugs said non-resistor, but the sites showed a non-resistor option, and an option with a resistor. Is one better than the other? or possibly depends if you convert the car from 6v to 12v? http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a611/THRobinson/Forum%20Crap/1947DodgeSparkPlugsresistor_zpsd8f6e007.jpg http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a611/THRobinson/Forum%20Crap/1947DodgeSparkPlugsnon-resistor_zpsc76296cb.jpg Quote
greg g Posted July 27, 2013 Report Posted July 27, 2013 resistor plugs are for dampening radio static, no redo no need for resistor plugs. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 27, 2013 Report Posted July 27, 2013 6-12 volt makes no difference on plugs. Quote
THRobinson Posted July 27, 2013 Author Report Posted July 27, 2013 (edited) What is meant by 'no redo no need'... ? Ideally... interior will be redone, under the hood stock, I don't have the know-how or tools to swap engines or anything so, relatively stock. Inside, I would like to replace the radio and speaker with a modern deck, pair of 6.5" components in the front and 6x9's in the rear.... maybe a sub if I get ambitious. Basically old car outside, new car inside. I'm not going drive around town listening to AM Radio. Of course, it's all AFTER I get the thing to start. Edited July 27, 2013 by THRobinson Quote

Under profile I see the line that says "Member Title" and has the Junior Member stuff written, but, when editing my profile, I went through all the pages and nothing at all. I also guess that some info didn't carry over when the forum here changed.... shows I have 30 posts, which seems to be off by about 200. Been such a busy past few years though I haven't touched the site until recently. Quote

THRobinson Posted July 27, 2013 Author Report Posted July 27, 2013 Not there... been through that 4x. Also on my profile page it says Cambridge, ON... which was changed last year. When I go to edit it shows Zurich, ON in the box... so, something is definitely not working right. Quote
THRobinson Posted July 27, 2013 Author Report Posted July 27, 2013 (edited) Ah well, not too worried about it... junior makes me feel younger. Spark Plug related... still not 100% sure if needing to use resistor or non-resistor. Not sure what 'no redo no need' means. Based on Autolite's site, my car should take the Autolite 295, which matches all the specs except the heat rating jumps from being 5, up to 10... which from what I've been reading means it's 'colder'. Which to me sounds good, until I read about the problems of running too hot or too cold. But I guess until actually driving I probably won't need to worry much. Don's first link, does find Autolite 295 and lists many alternatives. Edited July 27, 2013 by THRobinson Quote
sorensen_dk Posted July 27, 2013 Report Posted July 27, 2013 (edited) From what I read (not from experience) start out cold. If it fouls it's too cold. In one engine I run Autolite A9. Have Champion C12CY in another. Comparing the two physically the Autolite is hotter than the Champion. As I recall my dad always ran A7s. That would be my choice to get the engine running. And don't forget to gap the plugs before installing. Tom Edited July 27, 2013 by sorensen_dk Quote
Jim Yergin Posted July 27, 2013 Report Posted July 27, 2013 Not sure what 'no redo no need' means. I am sure Greg can speak for himself, but I believe it is a typo and he meant "no radio no need." Jim Yergin Quote
THRobinson Posted July 27, 2013 Author Report Posted July 27, 2013 Champion C12CY... which of course doesn't show in the cross ref list.... I guess their list isn't as good as I had hoped. More to plugs than I realized, always figured they were a bit more straight forward. If it fits the socket stick it in and gap it. Ah well, up side is, it seems I have more options now and can search for something cheap. I don't want to spend $50 on plugs to eventually conclude that the engine is never going to live again. Rather spend $25 and upgrade later down the road once it's running. redo=>radio wise... car has the original radio in it (which I plan to sell) and I plan to install a Kenwood deck for MP3s, then I 'should' use plugs that have resistors? I figure about 10K to 15K miles on a set of plugs in a car equipped with a traditional points and condenser ignition system, so they are not a "forever" thing. Get something now and drive it. If you get static on your sound system, go for resistors next time. By the way, static in a car radio can come from other parts of the electrical system like the generator too. Don't get rid of the radio: A number of options: 1. There are places can gut them and install modern electronics. 2. There are places that can add a hook up on to them for a MP3 player to the original radio. 3. You can get a MP3 to AM radio adaptor to play through an unmodified original radio. In the latter two cases you get the mellow tube radio sound with all the tracks on your MP3 player. Quote
THRobinson Posted July 27, 2013 Author Report Posted July 27, 2013 (edited) I'm redoing the dash... I know some people think that's a sin, but, not rebuilding the car for them. I figure there would be some people out there who would appreciate the radio and speaker grill more than me so I'll find a good home for it. It's not going to get tossed in the trash or thrown in the basement or anything like that. I will admit I like the sound of tubes, especially for guitar amps... that being said... tire noise, engine noise, speaker choice, volume etc... with all those factors, I doubt I'd hear the difference. Plus choice of music... for all you know I listen to techno! ... which I don't. Plus, I just don't like the looks of it. I'm going to do something that's minimalistic and art deco at the same time for the dash. I'm a designer and always wanted to design the interior of a car, so this is going to the highlight of the project for me. I like the car, but, not a fan of that time period for dashes. _shel_ny Posted July 27, 2013 Report Posted July 27, 2013 Rock Auto shows plugs for $1.06, to splurge at,....... $2.00. then take the %5 discount. (Current discount code listed in classified section of this site) Not sure about the shipping costs to Canada. You can plug that info in at the site. Quote
THRobinson Posted July 27, 2013 Author Report Posted July 27, 2013 (edited) Nice... $8.48 for 6, and about $12 shipping... and these days the US/CAN dollar is about the same after exchange which is a bonus since, well, so much more to buy from the US than Canada online it seems. I'll check for that discount code and maybe order me some. Rockauto Discount Code - Expires 9/20/2013 Edited July 27, 2013 by THRobinson Quote
_shel_ny Posted July 27, 2013 Report Posted July 27, 2013 Rock Auto is usually a good deal. I just ordered parts to fix my GM truck (coolant sensor, and connector). Ordered Thursday after 4PM. I installed them today (Sat). Truck is up and running. I am waiting for spark plugs to arrive. They are coming from a different location, but were shipped on Friday. One thing you sometimes have to watch is the shipping charges. When you add items to the shopping cart they sometimes come from different warehouses, and the price can jump. Even with the two location shipping on my order it was still cheaper than napa, and the parts were in my mailbox rather than me making a 30 + mile drive just to have them a day sooner. Quote
THRobinson Posted July 27, 2013 Author Report Posted July 27, 2013 Ya they seem to have some nice stuff... My only problem is being in Canada when it comes to shipping. I have to calculate the cost of shipping, duty and any kind of possible brokerage fees. That and some sites simply won't ship to Canada. I hate Amazon.com for that. Most stuff won't ship to Canada, then redirects you to Amazon.ca... which is the same company but, in Canada they don't sell about 90% of what is on the USA site. I don't think they sell anything automotive at all. Too bad too, came across a few spark plugs on Amazon.com when I was cross referencing and some were under a dollar on clearance. I think, now that I have the measurements and such, I'll just search for the right size and find ones rated for 7... from what I read, the default for this car back in '47 was either the A5 or A7, I've seen both mentioned. Autolite (when I use there vehicle finder) says to use plugs rated at 10 (Autolite 295 or 306) for some reason, since from what I hear is a bit high. But... I have time to search a bit more, and if buying from Rock Auto, code expires Sept 20th. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 27, 2013 Report Posted July 27, 2013 With the unleaded gas on the market these days you can get a lot more than 15-20 thousand miles on a set of sparkplugs. At least double that and more. Quote
