Don Coatney Posted September 1, 2013 Report Posted September 1, 2013 I have radial tires on my Pymouth. I have found that anything less than 34 pounds of air pressure makes my car steer hard at low speed. But it steers hard in both directions at low tire pressure and the free play is the same in both directions. Is your steering gearbox full of lubricant? Quote
doctor dirt Posted September 2, 2013 Author Report Posted September 2, 2013 I have Hankook radials 205/75/15 and run that at 35lbs. Not sure if the box is filled or not but we'll find out! The new fellow who has experience with this application from working on 40's trucks and he has no problem refering to the manual will come by once the lift is opened to me.. Hope to get it on the lift by Thursday. I'll get back here once we try to adjust it. thanx Doc. Quote
doctor dirt Posted October 24, 2013 Author Report Posted October 24, 2013 The coupe was adjusted today and then aligned and all went ok. The play is even and only about an inch on both sides before it engages. At this stage of the game I'll take it! I've been in and out of the hospital twice since I last posted and will try to keep up with the forums now. The car has been far more work than advertized but it is a beautifull machine, especially when it turns correctly. The wipers need attention next, not sure if the manuel vacs are going to work when Floridas rainy season hits. I'll need to measure where the Vintage A/C will be placed but I also will wait a while and find someone who knows how to install it properly. Also a radio/cd player and some speakers...................any info on a unit that is 6 volt? Is there such a thing? Any feed back will be appreciated. The weather has finally broken from summers heat and it feels great, the car ran out at 190-200d instead of 200-205d, it was happy today, me too. Doc. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 24, 2013 Report Posted October 24, 2013 Honestly if you want AC and a better stereo I'd just convert to 12v. There are ways around the conversion but with both things going they quickly become more trouble than they are worth. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 24, 2013 Report Posted October 24, 2013 Ed is right...it is so easy to covert to 12...and with the current drain you will have with the package..the smallest alternator is miles ahead of the generator for output and can handle this at idle whereas the generator output at low rpm is almost nil...and as far as makers of units..there are more fish in the sea than Vintage aire...lots more and better fitting ones at that and for your own peace of mind..go analog.. doctor dirt Posted October 24, 2013 Author Report Posted October 24, 2013 Thanks guys, I didn't mean the "brand name" Vintage just an under dash set up. This car has no plumbing other than defroster plumbing theres no equipment under the hood, it was deleted during restoration and they got cheap I guess not returning it. The A/C can wait and I do understand that I would be taxing the 6 volt system I was considering running a seperate power source. To be honest I don't want to do anything to this car except run it. The weather broke, I'm not in a hospital bed and I planned a trip just after Thanksgiving that will put about 600 miles on the coupe. .................tow trunk will follow 20 miles behind the first hundred miles!!! HA!! I will consider the change over I did want to keep the car "very old school" but things change. thanks so much Tim & Ed can't wait to hit the road I haven't left this town in almost 4 years I'm ready!!! Doc Quote
DJ194950 Posted October 25, 2013 Report Posted October 25, 2013 Best of luck on your trip! Take spares you have and diagnostic tools for any probems-- my experience has been the more prepared you are for a problem, Nothing happens! Glad things are getting back on track. Doug Quote
doctor dirt Posted October 26, 2013 Author Report Posted October 26, 2013 Doug tools would just ad weight to the coupe and that would slow us down..................I have a credit card and a small hatchet............the card will come out first then the hatchet if the card gets overwhelmed hahahaha!!!! I appreciate the advice but tools in my hands are worthless, if you see me under the car it just means I tripped and can't get up, seriously. I'm going to put about 200 miles on in town prior to the trip so hopefully the car is in good shape and running well. Always have some oil, fuel filters, coolant, cables and a bottle of Tanqueray or Jack where the tools used to go............... gotta be prepared! thanx Doug. Doc. Quote
DJ194950 Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 Ok, forget the tools, but spare fuel pump, maybe a generator and regulator, etc. So that when you use the card the car can be towed to a repair shop and they could fix it promply and back on your way. Reminds me of my dad's cousin who worked for years at Cape Canavral (spelled wrong I know!). His house was where in his yards poision snakes came arround, He always carried snake bite medication with him- even when he traveled.Old Grandad?? just in case! Always changed oil in his vechicles at 1000k. Not him but a shop, never forgot his medication for the wait. Never drove faster than 55mph on his 45 mile daily trip to the Cape. Said forks on the commute where always friendly as they stacked up behind him. Lots of hand waves! Doug Quote
doctor dirt Posted October 29, 2013 Author Report Posted October 29, 2013 Drove the coupe every day since the adjustments were made (100 miles). I need to readjust the brakes as its pulling slightly to the right and also forgot to grease the new king pins. I might have access to the lift on Weds nite and will get those problems addressed. Also forgot about changing the radiator coolant to the "green" fluid from the newer mix for more modern cars. Other than those few concerns the car is running out strong and I have met a fellow who says he can help with the vac wipers. Looking good and driving well. Will try to take some pics of the under carriage, its very nice and someone spent alot of money getting this car cosmeticly right! Talk soon, Doc. Quote
doctor dirt Posted October 30, 2013 Author Report Posted October 30, 2013 Quick question; When checking the oil (motor) the dip stick shows 3/4 down, is that because of the outboard oil canister (filter)?? Quote

martybose Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 Quick question; When checking the oil (motor) the dip stick shows 3/4 down, is that because of the outboard oil canister (filter)?? Only if it was bone dry when you filled the engine with oil, and you then forgot to check it after running the engine a while. Marty Quote
doctor dirt Posted November 5, 2013 Author Report Posted November 5, 2013 Marty thats exactly what happened! I had the clutch & coupler freshened up and replaced the fuel pump and other things. Changed the oil & filter but didn't realize that with the filter canister I was supposed to add another qt (6 in total) I did add the 1 qt but my reading when checking is 3/4 qt down. Thats why I'm asking about the canister possibly holding a 1/2 to 3/4???? Not sure, are you? thanx Doc Going to change out the rubber gromets for brass on the wiper arms, hoping thats the problem.
