Young Ed
I know this same thing comes up in the POC. Also one of the WPC guys was trying to get me to join for the same reason. I think the WPC wasn't all that fond of jont meet overall. I thought it brought more people and cars, but it seemed the crowd wasn't in favor of a joint meet, with the Desoto club at least, as much as th efew that were...who knows. Logisitics between two loosly run organisations can be a Ferd to organize I'm sure. I was odd being the second youngest (I assume) in a room of that many people. I think clubs like the WPC are in trouble....no new blood...

I'll probably stay in the club for a year more to see what it's like, and I'll have to attend some club meetings as well, but I just don't see that much interest in general from people younger than me (Joe, Ed are exceptions IMO). I see more interest in rat rod junk than restoring in the "kids"....gawd, when did I get this "old"?

There are no drastic modifications but I have made plenty of changes that differ from a true restoration.

I have three sons 37, 35 and 30 and none of them have the slightest interest in my hobby, not one Young Ed in the bunch! Attend a meeting or meet and it's obvious that people under 50 with an interest in stock non-muscle cars are few and far between. I guess we'll eventually go the way of the fraternal organizations. RouteVanJoe
I've tried to get the Route Van guy here but.....doesn't seem to be that interested yet. Nice guy tho. And now you can say you've succeeded! I've actually had this forum account for a while, but I tend to nose around forums only when I'm stumped on something mechanical... Also read with some interest the discussion in this thread of the pros and cons of the combined convention and the club demographics... As a convention first-timer, the combined convention was definitely a plus for me. I enjoyed seeing all the DeSotos and even the combined show was pretty small, so the more the merrier IMO. In fact, having the car show portion open to non-members (at a higher price, for sure) would have helped boost it further.
ggdad1951
aw man...now I gotta be nicer when I talk about you! Good to see you here. I think I'll stick inthe WPC for at elast another year and see what is going on locally. I really do think tho that it might be a Sysphusian endevour. Too many Crap-rod and hot rod lovers now that don't appreciate a restoration in the generations now. They want to recreate the Hot Wheels cars they had, just like the gnerations older than me wanted to recreate the cars they grew up with as kids. I think people around my age are kinda in the middle for whichever reason they will swing one way or the other. I honestly see restorations and those who appreciate them REALLY thinning out over the next few decades. Watch for all those beautifull resto's to get sold cheaper and cheaper and get turned into hot rods. Edited July 24, 2013 by ggdad1951

52b3b Joe
From what I've seen, most young people my age are into power, performance, laying rubber, and going fast. They will modify to achieve this at any cost. Two of my good friends have old cars. One has a 1965 Pontiac Grand Prix that is a very nice driver. The other friend has a 1971 Chevy Impala. Both cars are mainly stock (the Impala still has the original paint and is NICE). Also, both cars are being driven into the ground from them beating the crap out of them. Both cars sit outside year round. The only reason the cars were bought was because they were old and had a big V8. None of my friends have any intention of restoring a car, they just want to go fast. They all think I'm crazy for doing a full restoration on my truck. They thought I was joking when I told them I was restoring it back to original and putting the flat-head back in it. They just don't get it. I don't think they have the patients for it. Maybe as we get older, they will lean more towards restoration, but only time will tell. So looking at my group of friends that have old cars, 1 out of 3 are restoring while the other two have little to no interest in it. If you look at all my friends that are into cars, I am the only one of 6 or 7 that restores. I have little interest in going fast in an old car. I like having it original to have a little piece of history. I like seeing how a car was when it rolled off the assembly line. I do understand making hot rods and stuff, and going fast, but its just not me. I like turning something old and rusty into new again as it was the day it was made, or come as close as I can. I don't know if this speaks for the majority, but that's how it is with me and my friends. I'm 22 and the friends I'm talking about range from 21-24. I was also raised around stock restoration, so I'm sure that has something to do with it too! Only time will tell....

greg g
The Port Huron POC national has been moved to 8/20-8/24 2014. Really???? Good to find that info here!! On would think that something like that different a Date change would have appeared on the POC forum. Apparently they don;t think it's important enough to merit a post or an announcement there. Guess I will have to go over there and casually bring it up.

Awww man.....this is how I live my life.....maybe someday you will rebuild a 426 Hemi, or a 477 stroker, or a 408 stroker, or maybe even a 340 T/A.....and say, "Dang, that's gotta go in my truck!....at least for the weekend!"... ggdad1951
when I first started FEF, my one buddy was all "drop a V8 in there!" and the other was "restore!", the of course I work with a guy some may know, Mark Moriarity (big in the rod circles) and he was "why do you wanna go THAT slow?"! I sold my Corvair today and Sunday I am picking up my replacement car. I bought a 61 Ford Galaxie Convertible. Its a 390, 4 bbl dual exhaust with glass-packs, three on the tree, manual steering, manual brakes. I never said I was against performance if the car came with it! But I will probably never really get on it much. The car is turn key, no work required. That's a first for me! I'll post pictures of it Sunday or shortly after in the OT section.
