Just got the King Pin set from RockAuto a question for all? Is there any measuring first then turning the hardware over to a machine shop  prior to installing the pins? Doc

damn forgot about the "bearings"!!!

Wondering if an id number on the steering box case can give up any information in regards to manufacture and parts. Theres a 9 digit number on the bottom of the casing. (1138267-31)

The oil pan gasket was a mess, old!(had to hammer the holes back to even, someone over tightened it probably trying to slow the leak!

Steam cleaned it and some sanding and painted the outer case. Not much sludge at all the pick up was clean and everything looked fine.  The fuel pump gasket was also torn up. Still waiting on the bowl gasket.

The garage floor will tell the tale in the morning!!! ;)  Big stuff coming up; king pins & steering box!!!!                                                                       Then cosmetics and then a nice loooong ride!!    Doc.

Dry floor this morning ........ :D  a few drops but I didn't care for now!!! Took a ride for coffee and then a car wash and on to napa for a quart of oil! Car ran nicely and the steering and cornering is much better, can't wait for the king pins and gearbox to be done.

Oh yeah car was DEAD in the napa parking lot!!!!!  :o  Can you imagine a 64 year old starter failing???? B)  Yes the original piece with the exposed gear not looking to good!!  Supposed to be a man in town that rebuilds them and is familar with 6 volt and has a good inventory of parts, we'll see Mon. morning!

(Chrysler Corp.//Autolite//by Ford??) gezzzz!

Nothing like a "restored classic car"! Except when the mechanics aren't part of the restoration!!!!  Doc.

. . . (Chrysler Corp.//Autolite//by Ford??) gezzzz! . .

AutoLite wasn't always owned by Ford.

And the look I get when I order Delco-Remy parts for my Plymouth (Chrysler used Delco-Remy through 1934, switched to AutoLite in 1935).

Funny you should mention that, I met a guy this morning at coffee who stopped to look at the coupe who said he now owns a 32 Remy that belonged to his dad. The fellow had to be atleast 70 yrs old! He was debating what to do with the car, keep it and build it back or sell it!! I suggested he finish what his father started, he smiled.

I forgot all about the Remy isn't that funny when you haven't heard a word in years then you hear it twice in a day! HA!! Doc. :)

The steering box search has ended with advice from a classic car restorer who uses LLC in the ChiTown area. He knows the three young men who bought some defunked companies and merged them. Talked to one of the owners today and he said he's familar with the box and gave me a start it price at 275.00+  which is slightly lower than Red Head and alot lower than Lares!

Found a local guy for the Starter and he has all the parts needed, I asked him to itemize the build and I'll pick it up tomorrow night. He believes that there was parts added but the bulk of the components where original! The rebuild was 110.00, abit expensive but at this stage its shoot straight ahead and see what else breaks before I take my vacation ride.

So, I have the king pins still ahead, then the gear box to try and adjust but I think in needs to go.

Still have alot of cosmetics to add on too. The wiper grommets were not in stock but Collectors got a hold of them and is shipping to me by the end of the week.

Still didn't get to the tranny fluid find yet, will be calling Mobil to find their ISO 22 or 32!!

Plymouthy;   what I got in place of the "book" was dealers literature??????? "See the New Dodge" all the Wayfarer models! A Gyro-matic and Fluid Drive pamplet! Also the glove box Maintenance booklet! (operations/maintenance/adjustsment/drivers hints) Very disappointed I thought I was very clear that a "shop manual" was what I was asking for not the dealer literature! Tomorrow I'll deal with that BS!! Nite all and thanx again for your help!   Doc.

The book was a gift from my grand kids, they thought the dealers material was the same thing! The pamplets are actually pretty cool and they came with an old paint chart for Chrylser Corp. cars. I just found the reprint on ebay for 26.00 + 5.50 shipping, pretty good deal! Bought it!

My starter will be ready tomorrow morning so we've been set back abit! Instead of this being a king pin weekend I'm going to try and find the tranny lube today & tomorrow and square away the tranny. My friends lift will be earning some money over the weekend so the 49 coupe goes to the end of the line...HA!

I think I'll do the cosmetic stuff on Sat. and drive it out a few miles! Doc

I CAN NOT find any of the tranny lube options that are being discussed on another thread! What I can find is "Lucas Regular Gear Lube 80/90W"

Theres no GL3 or lower around here I've called Tractor Supply, Edison Truck supply and all the auto supply regulars. I'm tired of searching I'm ready to throw some Peanut oil in the damn thing!!!!  Will the #134 Ford oil work? If so I'm in because thats avalible here! I need a nap ;)  ha! Doc.

A good friend is an Amsoil rep so if this is the stuff then this search is over (thank god) I used the Amsoil products in my motorcycles for years, the primary and tranny fluids quieted the Harleys down especally the tranny gear "clunk"!!

thanx Plymouthy I'll put an order in tonite! Doc ;)

My buddy thinks he has 80/90 gear lube by Amsoil! Would the lube be better than the 10W/40? Doc

Posted (edited)

Thats what he's checking on now (in stock or not)! Is there a preference between the 10W/40 or gear lube? Doc

The 10W/40 is rated as a GL 1.

GL4 per specification has low content EP additives whereas oil at a GL1 rating does not..granted as said earlier that GL4 is way lower in these additives than that of GL5  for EP application ...it is there nonetheless..

Gotcha, the fellow here has the 10W/40 motorcycle in stock and I'll speak with him around lunch time. Starter should be ready late morning or afternoon, hoping to get one of the buddies over to the house to slap it in! Then on to the next Problem!! ;)  HA! Doc

The starters back and on the car. Hard starting had to pump and then pour a litlle fuel in the carb! Unusual because it had been starting up with two half way touches and then fired up. I guess sleeping for a week pissed the old timer off.

I don't have access to the lift this weekend so I'll do the cosmetics and clean the car up abit!

I couldn't find ANY fluids for the tranny locally not even an Amsoil retailer so I ordered it on line. Amsoil rep suggested the 75/90 lube (manual tranny & rearend gear lube oil) instead of the 10W/40 cycle oil that was supposed to be close to GL 1-3!! I used Amsoil for years on my Harleys from a newer Twin-cam to a Evo Stroker and other than Mobil 1 90 lube I used Amsoil in the motor/tranny/primary and it worked great, especially quieting the trannys on the twin cams.

Thats it, the next big thing is the king pins and pulling the gearbox and sending it out! Have a great weekend folks!! Doc ;)

My library has grown in status with the arrival of my Shop Manual, along with my Dodge Dealership literature, very cool.

I've fallen far behind my schedule because of an Oral Surgery thats been put off for about 2 years because of other more important broken parts!!!  Had my upper gums opened up and the bone shaved back on both sides inner and outer areas to accomidate an upper plate! My mouth was so swollen my air passeges in the nose were swollen shut hahaha!! been walking around with my mouth open to breath and trying to hold the plate secure in my mouth   hopefully Monday I can get the fitting secured and breath alot better.

Oh well back on track tomorrow I hope.

Still no grometts from Collectors its been a while........................to many excuses!

Hope to be taken a coast to coast Florida run soon, looking forward to some quiet time on rt.27 crossing Florida! Doc.

Drained the converter and tranny but my oil and lube box only had 2 qts of amsoil tranny lube 75W80 so we were 2 3/4 pints shy!!!!! I tried some 80/90 and that didn't work very well (Hush Plymouthy I knew it wouldn't but I needed to move the damn thing 30 ft and I can't push a cart let alone a car!! HA! ;)

I found a Amsoil rep with 2 qts and I cvan get them in the morning!!! :D

Has anyone used more than 2 3/4 pints before??? It seems alot more than 2+pints flowed out, it looked fairly clean and was deffinetly lightweight lube.

Also should one clutch plate be thinner than the other? My mechanic is not familar with the set up but he knows the Fluid Drive is a different set up! One plate looks worn and I'm getting more of a grind sound as I depress the pedal. If its depressed 50% its ok and I can engage gears but just beyond that its screamin' NO more!

The tranny fluid was very low and took just under 2 qts (Amsoil 75W90 (manual tranny fluid) but the converter seemed over filled if the 2 3/4 is correct. thanx Doc

I'm confused. You have a converter that you drained out only 2-3/4 pints of light weight  fluid? You can drive the car 30 feet with out any 3 speed trans oil till you get hooked up with the Amsoil guy .I guess I need to read the Dodge shop manual to understand whats going on here wirth fluid types and quanities and that Torque converter in your 49 Wayfarer.
