martybose Posted March 24, 2013 Author Report Posted March 24, 2013 Well, the combination of penetrating oil and some 8pt sockets allowed me to get both of the drain plugs out of my tranny. I let it drain until it stopped, then put in about 2/3 of a gallon of GL-1 into the gearcase and the OD case. Then spent the rest of the weekend putting the car back together. Next weekend I'll air up the tires, give it a good wash and take a drive to see if the whine from the OD is gone. If not, I'll be looking for another overdrive. Fingers crossed! Marty Quote
DJ194950 Posted March 24, 2013 Report Posted March 24, 2013 Hope that works well for ya, Best of luck!! Doug Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted March 25, 2013 Report Posted March 25, 2013 That "freeze plug" was removable and did expose the snap ring. Once the ring was expanded tapping lightly on the output shaft it all came out easily! Thanks alot, you prevented me from breaking some parts if i had taken it to a press to try to get it apart! That done, the outside measurement for the ring gear is 4.2735, with a machined surface but is sort of a rought cut- difefinately not smooth enough to serve as the side load carrier surface. Dutchman now you a measurement to compare with your Mopar R-10 ring gear outter dia. all parts look to be in good useable condition. Best to ya, Doug Measurement for the Ply R10 Ring gear is 4.258". Dutchman Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 Sorry for the delay Doug. I’ve been busy traveling to Viva Las Vegas and back. I talked to George yesterday and he said he believes the case is salvageable, but he will have a definite answer by the end of the week. George said once he knows for sure that the case will work, he would like to use those chevy parts if you still have them Doug. He is looking for the Planetary Gears, Sun Gear, rollers and what he calls the dog, which I’m a little unsure what that is. He explained that its the part that is normally attached to the adapter plate. If you have any questions let me know. I will let you know as soon as I hear back from George if everything is a go. Then let me know what the postage is and what method you would like me to send funds to you and I’ll get it to you. I’m trying to hunt down Georges address for you, I misplaced it at the moment, but should find it here soon. Thanks again, Dutchman Quote
DJ194950 Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 Dutchman, The parts are avail., no problem. Perhaps if George A. can send you a parts picture with the parts needed marked, you can email to me and make sure that he gets exactly what he needs. My understanding is he does not do the email thing so mailing it to you and forwarding to me will work the best. Too bad you HAD to attend the Vegas gig! Let me know, Doug Quote

Dutchman Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 Hey Doug- I just heard back from George and he said that my case was repairable. He gave me a list of parts from that Chevy you have that he could use to rebuild it. When I get home tonight I'll send you the list of what he needs. This is good news! They found some cracks in the case, but successfully braised them and then bored out the inside to accept the Chevy ring gear! I'm really excited that this is going to work out! Quote
Jim Yergin Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 That is good news. It might be a good idea to keep a record of what has been done and put into the overdrive so that a future owner (or even you) will know how it differs from the stock overdrive. Just a suggestion. Have fun, I love my overdrive. Jim Yergin Quote

Dutchman Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 Sorry Doug, i didn’t get a chance to send the list last night. Got home way to late last night. Here is a list of parts that George explained to me what he will need to rebuild OD: Ring Gear Planetary gears Sun Gear The piece that the sun gear goes into. it has 6 slots where the paw for the solenoid plunges into. he calls it the “dog" Sprag, which according to George is the clutch at the end that has the cage with all the rollers. George said that everything pretty much inside the OD case excluding the main shaft was damaged and would need replaced. If you have any questions, give me a shout. Also, I have Georges Address. Send me a pm and I’ll send it to you and let me know how you would like me to compensate you for shipping and such and I’ll send you funds right away. Thanks Doug! Quote
Dutchman Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 Great Idea Jim! I’ll make sure to document what changes George made to the OD. Quote

Young Ed Posted September 3, 2013 Report Posted September 3, 2013 Od output seal: national 8160s skf15620 FYI in case someone has trouble finding that national seal. The seal I removed is a national R6-110A which Timken showed as crossing to a 8160S for Borg Warner applications. My napa warehouse had 5. One is on its way to my store and I will try it tomorrow.
