1952B3b23 Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 (edited) Chris, 1/8 plate is thick enough, but 3/16 wouldn't hurt. Alright thats good to know, that will save me a little money since the 3/16" plate would be more expensive. The engine stand i would mainly use to just support the frame on either side so that i could spin it alittle and weld the frame easier. Thanks Edited February 6, 2013 by 1952B3b23 Quote
48Dodger Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 Geez...those engine stands.....thats a project still in progress....lol. What I did was take two of the 4 wheel version.....cut the rear wheels off... weld 5 inch wheels on the back to "level" the head tubes. Then I welded 2 x 3 square tubing to the engine plate. At this point I welded the suare tubing to the frame...... Look really close at those pics and you see one of the stands front wheels off the ground. This was the main problem......they were leaning different ways. I plan to fix by tying them together with several lengths of sq tubin'. The other problem was the height. It's to short. If I was going to do this again I would cut the front wheel tubing......connect it with the 2nd stand (this is the tie) cut the main part of the stand, add about 8-10 inches, and level the head tube in the process. Even though the one I slapped together is sub par......the benefits of it are incredible. Easier to sandblast, measure, weld, and paint....... 48D Quote

I may just fabricate my own that way i can make them square and level off the bat instead of dealing with the harbor freight ones. Although $45 a piece is pretty appealing.... Quote
1952B3b23 Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 My front shackle mounts were wore out, on the drivers side it was worn all the way through the mount only holding by rust. I'm surprised it didn't go through. Those rivets were horrible to get out, and took me a while. I made new mounts (have many hours in them). A cool project, but I'm happy that's over. Good job on the mounts. Where did you guys get the new shackles? I need a set for my front leafs and i looked on the NAPA website and the shackles advertised are for 2" wide springs not the 1 3/4" like what comes stock on the truck. Quote

Young Ed Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 I've heard at least for the 39-47 trucks that the WWII jeeps use the same ones and are readily available. Quote
1952B3b23 Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 "52b3b Joe" and "Young Ed" thanks for the lead on those. I also found the following ones on the NAPA site but they say they're for 2" wide springs and these are1 3/4". Although the ones that are on the set of springs that i took off do look like the NAPA ones. www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?R=RPC35417_0276850271 http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?R=RPC35516_0276850272 Quote
55dodgec3 Posted February 9, 2013 Author Report Posted February 9, 2013 Well, the frame is now in epoxy primer. After looking it over, I decided to Partially box it, meaning I'll box it up to where I can still get to the factory rivets holding the x-members. In case I ever have to repair a busted rivet. Check out how bad these pieces are! Quote
Young Ed Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 Roberts shows new ones. Could try VPW too. Quote

Check out how bad these pieces are! Mine were in as bad if not worse condition, & she only had 80,ish thousand miles on the odometer. I bought a set of F150 springs - shackles, & perches/mounts for mine, to go along with a ford 9" with 3.25 gears. Now since I went with the Dakota chassi, all of the parts, plus most of a speedway M-2 style front suspension & 4 wheel disc brake set-up, has become the foundation for my next project. ( After I finish this one! ) Quote
Desotodav Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 I have plenty of spare good ones here - freight costs would probably upset you though. How about a holiday in Oz and you can take them in your suitcase on your way home? Desotodav Quote

Desotodav don't worry Davin, if I ever make it down under, I'm visiitng you and bringing any goodies I can for you and will pack home what I can....thinking in 2016? Quote
Desotodav Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 $85 a piece sounds harsh, but then again they are not the sort of thing that you can just walk into any parts store and pick off the shelf. Unfortunately, there is no cheap (and reliable) option available for me to freight things over to you guys in USA. Maybe I need a 'parts mule'? I wonder if that is legal? You're welcome anytime Mark - just give me a couple of months notice and I will take some time off work to show you around. Bring empty suitcases! I am working on obtaining a few more parts trucks at present. Desotodav Quote
