47 Coupe Front Bearing and Seal part numbers

So I started my explorer disc brake conversion last night and its a good thing I did. My inner seal was shot on the drivers side and I was about to loose the bearing. I was planning on getting new bearings and seals any way, but when I used the part numbers I found on here I couldn't cross refrence them. Does anyone have any suggestions where to find a good listing for the inner and outer wheel seals and bearings?

Thanks for all the help so far guys!

Also if you just bring the #s off the bearings they should be able to look those up. Napa still has a pretty decent listing of 46-48 plymouth parts and might be able to look them up just by application.

I was in my "local better auto supply store" yesterday to get a new stop light switch which I'd asked for by modern part number. Chatting with the fellow behind the counter it turns out that he has kept all the paper catalogs over the years. Says he has catalogs squirreled away that have listings back into the '30s. So even if I hadn't had the part number there would have been a very good chance he could have looked up the number in his old books.

I highly recommend that you find the equivalent store in your area and purchase all your auto related stuff there. Even the things like oil and antifreeze that you can get cheaper at the bubble pack stores. You really want to help keep those guys (never seen a women in a shop like that but I guess there could be) in business.

Thanks alot guys! I did manage to find those part numbers this morning. I was able to find them on rock auto, all the bearings and seals I need for around 60 bucks. If I get them from my local NAPA they will run me damn near 200 bucks!

The problem with finding a good counter man and a good parts house, is I had a good parts house and the best counter man! It was me and my local NAPA! When I moved on from the parts buisness about 6 years ago they really went down hill. The guy who trained me told me on my first day if I couldn't look in the books for what ever I needed he wasn't gonna help me. He wasn't lying so I learned those books inside and out. The guy who trained me moved on to an O-reilly and they just can't get the parts I need most of the time. The kids that he's got trying to fill my shoes don't give a rats *** so most of the time I like to just jump behind the counter and grab the book my self, but they have pretty much pitched all the good ole books. A good counterman is a lost art! In all honesty I loved that job and if it paid I'd go back in a heart beat. I don't understand the hold up with these guys now a days, no one wants to serve the customer any more.

OK rant's over now!

In line at the autozone 2013............

one guy with chrome skull shifter knob

another with a metric socket set

a lady buying a single wiper blade.....and still not sure if it fits.

and a disreputable looking grey beard with greasy mitts, telling the zit face at the computer that it doesn't matter if his rambler had am fm radio or not, all he needs is a water neck gasket and a 165 degree thermostat.....

In line at napa/champion/big A auto 1973.........

there is a twenty foot long counter filled with parts books, snake oil products, and 10 disreputable looking characters all with various assorted grease stains upon their persons......all sitting on their stools at the counter slurping down black bitter swill and bull$hitting their morning away while the owner chats them up.

His number one man isn't even looking in the books because he has most things in his head already.

The counterman makes his sale and turns to the next man, who is probably reading the weekly dirty joke flier or staring at this month's pinup girl.....they discuss the game, or the fishing, then get on to business, so the next guy can slide over with a fresh cuppa joe and wait his turn. Nobody was in a rush, even the professionals......:)

That's the way I remember it and cherish it.

So true..In all honesty I wasn't even alive in 73...but I have been going to the local NAPA with my dad since I was in diapers and I remember thats how it used to be. In all fairness even the good ones can't remember it all like they used to because they have so many more cars and parts in their catalogs but at least they can try and or care!

So I got the drivers side together no problem all the part numbers were spot on, but the passenger side hub Inside Diameter is smaller and the seal isn't even close.  The O.D. of the spindle is the same, but the bearings and seals just aren't gonna work!  The seal that came out was plastic and there was nothing legible on it.  I took measurements, and the closest thing I and NAPA can find is Napa Oil Seal no. 17280   I.D.1.75", and O.D.2.41".  and it was a touch too small and fell right into the hub opening.   The drivers side took seal no. 5836 I.D. 1.734" and O.D.2.73".  Anyone got any suggestion or have any idea why these 2 hubs were different sizes.  I'm assuming someone pulled this hub off some other early Mopar vehicle, but I damn sure can't figure it out!  I've also got a full set of bearings that I can't use and haven't even addressed that issue yet.  However they were in good shape, and have good numbers on them I think 15123, and 09067 if I'm reading my notes correctly!

Thanks in advance for any help!

If I can't find any good seals I'm gonna have to find a new hub, so I may be in the market for one of those as well!

I think we need pictures. Perhaps you have a later 50s setup?

I'm wondering if they switched out the hub at some point to do away with the reverse thread wheel studs?  I'm not sure.  I think I have pics somewhere I'll see what I can find if not I'll try to get some on here!  I'll look into the later 50's dimensions.  I just spent 2 hours looking at seal dimensions for Plymouth, Dodge, and Desoto cars and trucks from the late 30's to 50's and haven't found that size yet.

Thanks for the help so far!

Well I just spent the last hour or so on the Timken website and found a seal thats very close to the right dimensions...like .002 Inches bigger OD so I'm crossing my fingers.  the part number crossed over to a new Infinity G35 seal, so I still have no idea whats going on with that seal but it only cost around $5 on rockauto so if it works I'm gonna stock up on em!  I did find a Desoto hub seal with the same OD as the hub I've got , but a much smaller ID as if the spindle was alot smaller diameter.  I'm thinking back in the 80's someone switched the hub for what ever reason, and just found a seal that fit this same seal was used in mid 80's izzuzu 4x4's.  The seal that came out is nitrile material and so is the one I ordered but I did find one made of steel, so I might order it if this fits.

Thanks again and keep you're fingers crossed!
