ggdad1951 Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 the good and the bad news for my speedo: the good: spun it up with the cable and a drill and it works well, my drill only goes to 20 MPH the bad: the cable end for the tranny interface is TRASHED! I pulled out little pieces of wire from the tranny mount and the end is obviously been "spun down" from the original size. Any thoughts on that phenomenon? The place who went over my tranny is VERY reputable and said thet replaced the gearing in the tranny for the speedo. Quote
HanksB3B Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 A good speedo shop (like the one I go to) will have that inner cable on a spool. and a guy named Heintz or Helmut who will measure the outer core add a certain length (that he knows intutively) rolls wire off the spool, cuts it to length and then uses a special tool that squares off the ends. That simple. If you have no similar resource and would like, send me the measurement of your outer cable and we could make Paypal/Ship arrangements. Hank Quote
ggdad1951 Posted June 3, 2012 Author Report Posted June 3, 2012 Thanks Hank, will see what I find out locally. Bigger question to me is WHY this happened, the cable was NEW! Pullling the cable is a royal PITA! Quote
HanksB3B Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 Assuming the new cable was worn at the transmission side, could it be the cable was not quite in far enough? When you say the cable was new are you refering to NOS or an aftermarket cable? Hank Quote

HanksB3B Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 Do you still have your old one? Wondering just how many in/lbs of torque (or just how freely the inner core turns in the original as opposed to the aftermarket one. since one of the ends of the new inner core must still be in good shape(?) is there a way to tell how far it should go into the trans side and how much it should go into the speedometer? Maybe the trans side just didn't have enough length engaged and this caused it to disintegrate? The trouble with old trucks is there are not enough old people around who know how to fix them. Desotodav Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 I wonder if the truck inner speedo cable is the same length as the car ones Mark??? I saw these NOS cable inners on Epay the other day and considered buying them... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Desoto-Dodge-Chrysler-Plymouth-Speedo-Cables-x10-NOS-/280890988297?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4166685709#ht_1236wt_1163 . ggdad1951 Posted June 4, 2012 Author Report Posted June 4, 2012 thanks guys! I'm goning to dig out the original tonight and check itover, if it looks good I'll clean it up and put that back in when FEF comes back from the beauty parlor. He took a trip there yesterday and will be back this weeknd after he gets his assembly scratches fixed and gets a final once over. But I still wonder as to the WHY it happened? I had a good 5/8"+ engaged in the tranny socket. Quote
Young Ed Posted June 4, 2012 Report Posted June 4, 2012 Compare it to the original and make sure its wound the same way? Thats the only reason I can come up with as to how it got messed up. Quote

ggdad1951 Posted June 4, 2012 Author Report Posted June 4, 2012 ok, the original is shot, the cable is busted off where it'd enter the tranny, BUT it is only 55" or so inches long, the one I put in was about 60" so may have bound up? The inner cable is definitely better built as is the outer housing. Quote
wallytoo Posted June 4, 2012 Report Posted June 4, 2012 the length of the "new" cable shouldn't matter. it would only be a problem if the assembly was kinked in order to fit. as long as there weren't any tight bends or kinks, binding shouldn't be the reason for the failure. i don't know what "the inner cable is better built as is the outer housing" means. ???
