dave5711 Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 My tank has some varnish and rust stains in it. I was thinking of using paint thinner, but thought I'd ask what some of you guys had done. I'm hoping to run the truck this weekend. It'll be out of a Gas can, but it'll run. Quote
pflaming Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 My Aux gas tank. Maybe I will paint it black, put a junction in the fuel line and have a reserve! :DWorks great! But it empties FAST so my carb must be very rich or I better get me an oil well in Alaska, I'd get one in Canada but freight is too expense 'outside the USA"!!!! In TEXAS they put 'brass' balls in their tanks!!! Quote
Desotodav Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 I see a lot of short journeys in your future Paul! Dave: I used a fuel tank kit to thoroughly clean out my tank. I then sealed it with Red Kote and haven't had any problems. Link to red Kote technical sheet... http://damonq.com/TechSheets/Red-Kote.pdf . Desotodav Quote

I know of many who swear by vinegar, pour a gallon or so of pickling vinegar into tank and swish it a round leave it for a day or so, occasionally turning the tank to get full coverage. Then rinse and dry.. Karl Quote
Guest dadsdream Posted June 4, 2012 Report Posted June 4, 2012 i have had decent luck on old tractors by putting some pea gravel in the tank with some gas or paint thinner. then tarp strapping it to the rear wheel of one of my tractors and jacking that wheel off the ground then letting the tractor run in 1st gear at a slow idle. about an hour or so of that and it usually gets all the rust and everything broke loose so you can wash it out. NiftyFifty Posted June 4, 2012 Report Posted June 4, 2012 im just taking a shot in the dark, but take it to your local rad shop and have them steam and dunk it and then they can coat the inside so it won't rust again right away. But if you want to go the hillbilly deluxe version I'm not opposed . Foaming stove cleaner works too but it's a bugger to clean the white off Quote

I do the same thing but I put in bolts for what im working on in too so they come out clean as well. I put a couple gallons of kerosene in also. Sometimes its a pain to get all the bolts back out but its worth it. Quote
