pflaming Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 I had to drill out the blood under my finger nail and Hank "shuttered" just to think about it. The younger generations just do not understand: here are a couple of common medical practices in our home when I was a kid, you may add yours. (1) for a sore throat my mother took a spoon wrapped the handle with cotton and swabbed my throat with macreacrome; (2) when we stepped on a nail we soaked the foot in kerosene, (3) if we had a bad cut while tractor driving we covered the wound with axle grease or clean motor oil, (4) when while tractor driving we got chapped lips we used axle grease, (5) for a bloody nose we put a nickle under the upper lip to stop the bleading. So drilling a hole in a fingernail was just a return to my past. Quote
TodFitch Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 Last I heard, putting a hole in a toe or finger nail to relieve pressure when you have blood under it is still standard practice. For the rest of your older home treatments listed, I'd really avoid them. Quote

Desotodav Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 The axle grease on the chapped lips from your #4 sounds a bit harsh Paul. A farmer once told me that the best things for chapped lips on the farm was to press your lips against the butthole of a cow - reckoned that it didn't fix them but it sure stopped you from licking them!!! pflaming Posted May 6, 2012 Author Report Posted May 6, 2012 Well it wasn't as bad as the rancher's made it to be. We'd rub the grease in then wipe off as much as we could so the reality was not nearly as bad as the perception. Yet oil is oil, it just depends upon how much perfume you add! Quote
TodFitch Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 ...Yet oil is oil, it just depends upon how much perfume you add! ...and potentially toxic additives the manufacturer used to make the oil or grease better for its intended use in machinery. Quote
MBF Posted May 7, 2012 Report Posted May 7, 2012 I had an old farmer tell me that he sprayed WD40 on his wife's knuckles every day to help her arthritis. Said it worked wonders, but she insisted that he not smoke around her. Mike Quote

48Dodger Posted May 7, 2012 Report Posted May 7, 2012 Crude oil, its natrual state, is used in some countries for threapy..... I agree with Todd....to a point. Motor oil has additives that MAY cause cancer, but most motor oil additives are designed to clean (detergents), fight acid (corrosion inhibitors) and antioxidants to fight oxidation. I can't believe anyone here has had major health issues from greasy hands, with or without cuts.....and for pete's sake....keep some neosporin in your tool box. lol 48D Quote
