HanksB3B Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 No I mean what is a rebuild kit? A gasket set or do you mean you found someone to rebuild your engine for $1,200? If so that's a fair price but not a smokin deal. Hank Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 have you checked the reference page on this forum for supplier? just to make things a bit more simpler to the audience, list where have you priced your kits to date...weed out all the repeated threads etc.. Quote
54Illinois Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 You can put one together thru ebay. If you are not looking for new, i will be listing parts from my 218 I pulled from a 54 Savoy. Are you boring the cylinders? Quote

flatheadtim Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 Ya I agree with Don. Tear it down take measurements/inspection/wiggle valves, wobble pistons, chain slack, cracks, etc. or mic everything and see what you are going to need. Quote
greg g Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 There are several sources for engine parts, and if you cherry pick you might save a bit hear and there. As far as a kit no such thing really, and why would you buy parts you do not need. When I did mine a few years back I spent about 750 for theparts I needed, 400 for machine work, and a few hours of my loabor in remove and replace and dissasembly and re assembly. One of the things about owning, building and driving an old MOPAR is you have to be resourceful, as there is not the reproduction parts available like for those F and C off brand vehicles. As noted a dissasembly and ispection of our engine will determin what parts you need to replace, a generic kit would not necessarily fit the bill. Quote
plyroadking Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 I just put mine back together a couple weeks ago, I disassembled the ending and dropped the pieces off at the machine shop and told them to call me after it was bored out so id know what size pistons to get. Total was about $1,000 for parts and shop. But I did everything that I could do myself to keep the cost down Quote
54Illinois Posted April 21, 2012 Report Posted April 21, 2012 not sure about the cylinders, but sure boring me...lol Is it still "pick on Tim Adams day?" Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 22, 2012 Report Posted April 22, 2012 NO..rule of the forum, if you cannot answer in a timely manner on a thread the long time in between posts shows that you have had too much time to consider an answer so thus it is void..it must be a quick retort for it to count...better luck next time.. Plymouthy Adams Posted April 22, 2012 Report Posted April 22, 2012 Don..it pretty much is a given, you know, rule of thumb deal....however like always I appreciate the fact that you use the "search feature" Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted April 23, 2012 Report Posted April 23, 2012 Check out the Vintage Power Wagons web site, they are very knowledgable and have good prices on parts, last time I looked NOS pistons for $75 a set pretty good. Quote

I think I then figured out that I was doing it myself as best I could. Just curious, what was your parts source? Quote
james curl Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 I got almost all of my parts from Terrell Machine in Deleon, Texas. He is listed in the vendor section on the home page for this forum. I priced every piece that you need to completely rebuild including the water distribution tube, oil pump, fuel pump, water pump, all valves, valve guides, pistons, all bearings including the rear seal, timing set, and the gasket set and it was just under $1000.00. My machine work cost me $750.00 which included line boring the mains, surfacing all mating surfaces, installing the valve guides and facing the valve seats, boring the cylinders, re manufacturing the rods with new bushings and reaming them to size and milling the head. I had another $250.00 in the crank for building the thrust surface by welding then machining to the correct dimension as well as Turning the mains and rod journals. Then there was another $150.00 to rebuild the harmonic balancer and finally surfacing the flywheel and rebuilding the old clutch and pressure plate for another $85.00. As you see it can all add up fast. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 and for all the new guys jumping in here with their cars..good time to ponder the overall costs of this project to just make it a safe runner...most folks have between 500 and 750 in just rebuilding the stock brakes also...then if your tank is in need of repair, say a radiator or couple peices of glass...you got a considerable amount in the car before you even think about that seat you want to recover or maybe what color to put the body (plus any body work or course) not only money but it will eat your time for lunch and turn your mind to goo if you think you will have it done in one summer/winter time frame especially if you have a house, yard, wife, kids, extended family or the 9 to 5'er daily grind. Don't even try to take into the account of time wasted if you a golfer... Quote
austinsailor Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 My local old time machine shop does quite a few, and the price runs about $1500 - $1600 parts and labor. Gene G. Central Mo. Quote
ol'skool Posted April 28, 2012 Report Posted April 28, 2012 finally surfacing the flywheel and rebuilding the old clutch and pressure plate for another $85.00. As you see it can all add up fast. How did you rebuild the clutch for $85.00? I am in need of a clutch disc and pressure plate but everything is in the neighborhood of $300 for all the pieces including bushing and bearing. Quote
