Jim Shepard Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 Some of you may remember my post back in November about how I was towing my B2B to the muffler shop to have the new pipes built. Well, somehow the truck got into second gear and, to make a long (and sad) story short, I ended up doing about 45 mph in that gear and all h*#+@ broke lose. When I dropped the oil pan I found two pieces of what looked to be gears and my guess was either (or both) the oil pump or cam. I also found a very few metal shavings and saw some more peeking out from one of the crank journals. There was also some scrapping/scratching on #1 and #2 pistons. When I finally got the motor out and pulled the oil pump, this is what I found. Two teeth gone and three cracks in the oil body shaft. It also doesn't turn. It was still full of oil, but after the teeth went south it quit pumping and that's all she wrote. I'm hoping I stopped before I did too much damage. Most of the motor was oiled up really good and other than a few shavings and those two gears, I didn't see anything. I'm taking it back to the machine shop tomorrow and then we'll really see what happened... Quote
Jim Shepard Posted January 10, 2012 Author Report Posted January 10, 2012 Well, I'm hoping I didn't do any damage to the cylinder walls, timing chain, crank or cam. I'd be very happy (and lucky) if all I have to do is clean up the cylinder walls, replace the bearings and stick a new pump in it... Quote
B1B Keven Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 That sucks! I have an extra pump, let me know if ya need it. Quote
Jim Shepard Posted January 10, 2012 Author Report Posted January 10, 2012 Thanks, but I've got one also and I'll probably just get a new one. They're not that expensive. Quote
John-T-53 Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 Jim, I feel for ya man. Been there before - nothing worse than having to re-do what was once ready to go. Good luck, and let us know what the shop finds out. Quote
48Dodger Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 Duuuuuuude.....you're making me worried. Got my fingers crossed. 48D Quote
Jim Shepard Posted January 10, 2012 Author Report Posted January 10, 2012 Took the motor in to the machine shop today. We popped off the #1 & #2 rod caps and those bearings were bone-dry. The crank journals are scratched, but not too bad. The cam gear (where the oil pump connects) looks to be ok, but we'll know more when we pull it out. It looks like I'll have to replace the pistons. We'll know more on Thursday when we pull them out and look at the cylinder walls. I'll take photos and post them... Quote
Fernando Mendes Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 Jim,I would like to know the probably causes(lubricate,...) after you know.Thanks. Quote
Fernando Mendes Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 It may have been a problem of "cementing" in the oil pump gear? Quote
John-T-53 Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 Was the crankcase full? Or was the engine just lubed for assembly? If the crank was spinning, oil would have been pumped throughout the engine and things would have been ok. But 45mph in 2nd gear would produce high rpm's (over 3500 probably) and not good at all for these. Quote

Jim Shepard Posted January 11, 2012 Author Report Posted January 11, 2012 As luck would have it, I had filled the engine with oil a couple of weeks before. So, barreling down the road I was lubricating the engine, but it was still spinning too many revs (my machinist thinks maybe 5-6,000). The pump gave out, froze up and stopped lubricating. No. 1 and 2 pistons got scorched and we'll see tomorrow how much damage I did. Quote
John-T-53 Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 With 2nd gear at 1.78:1, 45mph, 27" tall tires, 4:10 rear ratio, 4087 rpm! http://www.ringpinion.com/Calculators/Calc_RPM.aspx Quote

John-T-53 Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 That actually brings the rpm's down under 4k. Still too high, tho. Good luck Jim! Quote
Fernando Mendes Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 These data are approached. Quote
Fernando Mendes Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Estou com medo de acontecer o mesmo com a minha B3-B.O que não devo fazer para que isto não ocorra? Quote
48Dodger Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Translation: "I'm afraid the same thing happen with my B-3-B. What should I do, to make this not happen?" 48D Quote
Fernando Mendes Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Then what should we do to make this not happen? Quote
Dave72dt Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 I'm going to make a guess that it would be very hard for it to jump into gear while it was moving. It may have been left in gear to keep it from rolling while being attached to the tow vehicle. Even a synchroed trans needs to be somewhat in the ballpark as far as rpm to get them to shift. Quote
Jim Shepard Posted January 13, 2012 Author Report Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) Ok fellas... Here's the latest: Apparently I didn't do irreparable damage. I watched the machinist dismantle the motor today and, with the exception of two pistons and all the bearings, I'm good to go (well, except for the previously mentioned oil pump...). No. 1 and 2 pistons got really dry and hot and are no good. Those cylinders will hone up fine and the 1 and 2 crank journals buffed up good. The cam gear has a couple burrs that can be filed down. As to how this happened, I wish I knew. I also think it's unlikely it went into gear by itself. I had towed this truck a couple times before just like this without incident. Anyway, I'm pretty pleased - I "Dodged" a bullet. Here's some photos... Edited January 13, 2012 by Jim Shepard Quote
ggdad1951 Posted January 13, 2012 Report Posted January 13, 2012 good to hear it wasn't as bad as it could have been! Quote
Jim Shepard Posted January 13, 2012 Author Report Posted January 13, 2012 Me too. Looks like I'll be at the BBQ this April. Should have the motor back in a couple weeks. Quote
48Dodger Posted January 13, 2012 Report Posted January 13, 2012 Good to hear it Jim..... Here's some engine pics from when my race car caught fire with me in it. Just to help take your mind off your prpblems for a bit. damage included: cam shaft in 5 pieces windowed 2 cylinders bend crank shaft windowed the block 4 cracked lifters several bend push rods all that "chunks of metal" in the valley is one of the pistons! 48D Quote
