Jon,

The biggest factor in the mileage you get is determined by your right foot. The rear end ratio will make a difference of course as will several other things, such as whether you need to drive 75 on the freeway or can live with 55-60, but getting the best economy is up to you. I have several friends who's very life seems to depend on how fast they can accelerate and they're always belly-aching about what lousy mileage their stupid vehicles get and I never say a word because they think they drive like a grandmother. Lynn and I got 16+ mpg in a Ford van that was two stories tall and half a block long carrying literally a ton of stuff from Boston to Denver but we never went more than 60 and never had a problem. Fords traditionally got the worst mileage of any on the "Big 3" vans (the one we drove was an '84) so I would expect that one to do much better and I wouldn't worry too much about it.

paint it flat black and put a red stripe & a spoiler on it...I pity the fool who don't think that'd be cool

The A-Team! Bet they didn't worry about mileage!:P

My sister in law has a wide body built Pleasure Way RV on a Dodge Chassis 360 4 speed auto with OD.

It got 13/14 towing a laoded dual axle U Haul to Florida Basically all interstate at 70, and then got near 18 on the way back unloaded at 75.

Chevies I think are a bit thirstier, but hers is a fully equiped wide body RV with tv fridge water tank etc.

I had a 86 Dodge LWB conversion with a 318 and three speed, it would get 18 on the hiway.

Figure 12 MPG maybe more if you baby it. In my experience Chevs get the worst mileage Dodge best, Ford 302 usually very good but 351s lousy.

The van looks like awfully good value for the money if you want that kind of vehicle. As far as mileage goes you have to be philosophical. If you want the room and comfort it is going to cost you. People put too much emphasis on gas cost anyway. If you bought a new 4 cylinder car the payments and insurance would cost you way more than the gas for the old van. But somehow they forget depreciation and insurance that cost $$$$$$ and concentrate on saving pennies at the gas pump.

I had an employee that traded in her paid-off well-running Camaro for an overpriced worn Malibu to save on gas mileage. She ended up losing the car because she couldn't keep up the payments. Her fuel economy savings for an entire year ($371) was less than one monthly payment on her Malibu. People are stupid, and car dealers are kept in business by them.

That is one bad thing about the 350sbc.....poor milage......I had a 1981 GMC 2500 and all I could squeeze out of it was 10 mpg (canadian). Went back to the dealer to see what was wrong, he just shrugged his shoulders and smiled....
