jcmiller Posted November 6, 2011 Report Posted November 6, 2011 As I don't have the ignition key, I had a locksmith come out and have a look to see what could be done for my '42. He did not think this is the original ignition lock. Can you tell from this picture if he is correct? Also, I looked at a parts reference manual and it looks like the same ignition lock cylinder/key was used for P15 "BP" series. What does the "BP" series mean? The other two series listed were HK and CA. The other picture is just for fun. I can't believe it's still in the glove box after all these years. Thanks! Quote
Young Ed Posted November 6, 2011 Report Posted November 6, 2011 The p15 ignition switch is held in by 1 screw from underneath and is slightly inset. It also lights up with the interior lights. Quote
jcmiller Posted November 6, 2011 Author Report Posted November 6, 2011 Thanks, that looks a lot different than what I have. Do you know what that BP series business is about? Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted November 6, 2011 Report Posted November 6, 2011 That does not appear to be an original ignition.....does it have a screw on ring on the outside? The pic Ed sent is right. Those switches can be found from time to time on ebay....some with key and others without. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted November 6, 2011 Report Posted November 6, 2011 'BP series' probably refers to the keyway style (grooves on the sides of the key). They varied from year to year and occasionally plant-to-plant. Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 6, 2011 Report Posted November 6, 2011 If you go to the "car parts for sale" forum on this site there are several folks parting out P-15's. Someone should have what you are looking for. Quote
jcmiller Posted November 6, 2011 Author Report Posted November 6, 2011 Thanks, I'll try that. The page from the reference manual is attached that lists the "series" I noted before (courtesy of Chet's Coins' document web). jcmiller Posted November 8, 2011 Author Report Posted November 8, 2011 I pulled the lock and it is definitely not original. For one thing, it has just two connections on the back and my wiring diagram says there should be three. (There are also seven wires connected to it instead of just four.) I have a couple leads on a replacement. In the meantime, I'd kind of like to try to fire this thing up. Can I just put a jumper wire between the two connections and use the starter pedal to give it a go? Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted November 8, 2011 Report Posted November 8, 2011 You can buy a new tumbler with keys (Pentastar style) that will fit the original P15 housing......at OReillys for 8 or 10 dollars. Can't find the picture with stock number right now. Quote
jcmiller Posted November 9, 2011 Author Report Posted November 9, 2011 Here is a picture with a ruler so you can get the scale right. Send me a PM if you want a non-reduced quality picture or a pdf version. I don't think it will ever come loose - it's glued on tight. If that label ever comes loose, please scan it & post a PDF here. I would love to try to reproduce it for my car.Neto Quote
