JerseyHarold
Both kids are now in college and my wife and I have decided to downsize to save some money. Our house is too big for us and New Jersey taxes are absurd. We're considering Delaware because it's not too far from our families and the property taxes are much lower. We'd like to live in a suburban town or decent neighborhood in a larger city. Does anyone on the forum live in Delaware or have any insights into the state, along the lines of quality of life, areas to avoid, job availability, etc? Any thoughts appreciated. Joe Flanagan
We've been looking in the region west of Philadelphia. If you do enough looking around on the internet, you'll find forums where they talk about this kind of thing. They discuss neighborhoods, quality of life, taxes, etc. There are a couple of websites that rate cities and neighborhoods on their walkability, convenience, safety, etc. I've done a little looking in the Wilmington area but haven't been able to find the type of place we're thinking of. I also frequent the real estate listings in those areas to get an idea of property values, neighborhoods, etc. Good luck.
greg g
About ten years ago we did a little looking in the Lewe's area. Of course the closer to the water you want to be the more you pay, and the more congested the area is. Saw a couple places in the georgetown area that were nice and reasonable priced, but we never went any further than that. Unfortunately, garages seem to be an unknow commodity there abouts. Don Coatney
I recently did a cost of living comparison between a couple of cities using google to find charts on 3 different web sites. It was interesting that none of the sites were in agreement. Some listed high housing costs and some low housing costs for the same city. Same with medical, food, gasolene and auto repair costs. I conclude that the cost of living comparsions you find on line are worthless.

Plymouthy Adams
if you move out of state, you will have to change your forum name..not sure it is worth the hassle.. it is hard to find an area that will have a balance of all you are looking for..same with jobs.. Chester Brzostowski
Thanks for the responses. We hadn't considered the Philadelphia suburbs but will check them out. I have a 3 year old home in Greenwood Delaware. South of Wilmington you are in farm country. Delaware has no personal income tax and no sales tax. I have a 4 bedroom home on an acre of land and property taxes are less then $1,000 per year if I was retired they would drop to around $500 per year. No local municipal tax. Not much to do for employment unless you are a farmer or small business owner. Great place to retire to. Chet…

No jobs, but every imaginable type of active fraternal organisation to make new friends, and churches of just about every stripe. New hospital, and three pharmacies. Two auto parts stores, seven gas stations, two hardware stores, and a farm & ranch store. I've got a 3 bedroom house on .25 acre that I will be happy to sell for what I still owe on it. Right next to the local high school football practice field. Walking distance for Friday night lights, and the fairgrounds. Easy deer hunting in the fall. Just to sweeten the deal, I'll throw in a hunting rifle and ammunition. Any takers?
