Niel Hoback Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 Fredericksburg seems to have come thru safely. I haven't been around town yet, lots of branches to pick up, but all looks well. Quote
Mark D Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 We're getting lots of wind now, nothing steady, just good gusts. Ripped a few tree out of the back yard moments ago and laid them over near my shed. Power went out at 11am. (love this ipad with 3g)... Got my gen-set out and started it to keep my sump pump going. Just checked the pump and it seems I've smoked it. Smokes pouring out of the motor, so off to the in-laws I go to borrow the spare before if the water rises in the hole any more... Quote
1940plymouth Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 As of noontime, we have gotten just under 4 inches of rain, with some wind, but nothing like what was predicted thankfully. There is some flooding in the area and evacuations going on in a campsite and trailer park a few miles from here. So far no loss of electricity and sump pump is working well, thankfully Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 It was a long night, The wife and I watched football until the wee hours of the morning. The wind was whipping hard on the house. We got tired and went down stairs and read some magazines. The lights started to flash but did not go out. We are old so our eyes got tired we went to bed. We woke this morning had electric went outside looked around and no damage. we just had leafs and branches with debre all over. we cleaned up and get this we rode around the town in the Plymouth:) three blocks from my house they had no electric. The stores were closed and gas station. we finally rode far enough that the giant was open got a paper and went back home. Wow we dodge a big one. I hope everyone is OK:o I think I am living right! greg g Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 Did you check your off premiss parking and storage facilities??? Quote
Oldguy48 Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 We were extremely fortunate. Power did not go out although the generator was gassed up and ready to go if we needed it. Didn't lose any complete trees, but plenty of leaves and branches in the pool. Spent all day yesterday preparing for the storm expecting the worst, but endured very little, if any damage. Hoping everyone else can report similar results. Wayne Quote
Sigtyr01 Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 Good to hear that you are ok ! I guess more reports will come during the night - keeps my fingers crossed that they will be positive!! Quote

Chester Brzostowski Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 It looks like we escaped with no damage. The Delaware house I believe made it through without any major damage even though we had tornados just a mile or two away. We never lost power either in Virginia or on the Delaware shore. I will know about Delaware once I get back out there next weekend but my neighbors would have called if we had problems. I think, all in all for my vacation week complicated by an earth quake and hurricane we were all very lucky. Chet… Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 No damage at our house but it rained for a solid 24 hours with no letup. The winds got pretty scary around 2 or 3 in the morning. Our neighbors lost a maple tree, which came down on another neighbor's garage and smashed it flat: Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 I don't think so. It was so old it was sagging under its own weight. Probably the rush of air preceding the falling tree was enough to flatten it. That tree would have taken out the power to the entire neighborhood but its branches stuck in the ground and held it up so it couldn't fall all the way through the power lines. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 Somebody better get that kid some help. He's got a long day ahead:) Hey Joe, I was over there on Route 1 I wanted some Dounuts but the Kispy lream was closed they did not have any power:mad: I drove the Plymouth. All the workers were there but no double glaze. That tree is huge....WOW Quote
Mark D Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 Alls well here in mass again. Storms passed, powers restored, yards a freaking mess... Drove over to check ruby and she faired just fine hunkered down in her carriage house a mile up the road. Quote
Greenbomb Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 Glad to hear everyone made it OK. Let's hope it's done with that stuff! Quote
yourpc48 Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 Around these parts they call that fallen tree FIREWOOD. Glad everyone seems to have made it through without major damage so far. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 Glad to hear no one sustained any serious damage. I can sympathize with that sort of stuff. They are beginning to make a little progress on our new house, replacing the one done in by the tornado. Quote
Chester Brzostowski Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 Lookin good Bob. Is that the Garage we are looking at first in the picture ? Chet... Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 Apparently I have a subconcious urge to be a glutton for punishment. Went TO New Jersey for a family function with the In-laws, that happened to coincide with the arrival of Irene, but was planned too far in advance and too expensive to cancel or postpone. The event was Saturday so it wasn't affected too bad by the storm, but spent Friday battening down hatches and Sunday cleaning up (not to mention the cooking and preparation for the event). Father-in-law's house in South Amboy, Brother-in-laws house in Bradley Beach and their neighbors - lots of rain, flooded basements, wind, foreign objects in the pool and yard, and a few leaks in the ceilings. Got the big stuff cleaned up in time for the lifting of the road closures at noon, and headed home.....through what was left of the storm. Trip home was more exciting than the storm itself. Road closures due to flooding, fallen trees and power lines all the way to just south of Syracuse. BUT - being the strong back from out of town and only worrying about how wet I get takes a load off the "locals". Would have gone without the family function anyway. Glad to hear the Forum's "locals" seem to have weathered the storm OK. Just do me a favor and don't become complacent - better to prepare for an emergency and not have one, than have an emergency and not be prepared for it. That's what happened to New Orleans - complacency. Quote
greg g Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 Some folks we know were in NEw Hampshire for a wedding. It took them about 4 hours to go about 1 hours distance because of wired down trees down and road flooding. The mother and father left about 15 minutes before the son and girl friend. The mother and father got out of NH, the son and girlfriend got cut off by road flooding. Just 15 minutes later. They are still in VT this morning. This from today's NY times: Thruway spokesman Michael Sullivan said parts of the highway were under 3 to 4 feet of water. Southbound lanes were closed Sunday for 137 miles from Exit 24 in Albany to Exit 12 at West Nyack. Northbound lanes are shut for 90 miles from Exit 8 in Westchester County to Exit 20 at Saugerties. The flooding from Tropical Storm Irene also has forced the closure of Tappan Zee Bridge. Sullivan did not know when the eastern sections of the highway would re-open. Irene dumped 13.3 inches of rain on rural East Durham in Greene County and 12.2 inches in nearby Jewett. Kingston logged 7.85 inches of rain and 8.8 inches fell across the river in Rhinebeck, according to the National Weather Service Quote
Mark D Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 This is the Carrabasset River which runs along route 27 for some distance. The water was over this roadway at one point yesterday. We've got some land in near this and our neighbor sent this photo to me this morning. Lends truth to the old maine sayin'; "Ya cain't get they-ah from he-ah." Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 Did you check your off premiss parking and storage facilities??? Greg was down to the garage today and drumroll........ No damage just leaves everywhere:o KNock on wood! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 Lookin good Bob. Is that the Garage we are looking at first in the picture ?Chet... I think so......as far as I can tell. Hopefully will have enough $$ left over to build a detached two car garage also. Will just have to wait and see. It's been pretty much impossible to go out and buy new "stuff" to replace things like furniture as we have no real place to put it. Will have to wait til the house is done. Quote
