addicted2dunes Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 I just picked up another '50 Plymouth P20 this weekend and this thing has an awesome steering column. Going to use this column in my car now. It looks all stock, even has the full, unbroken, horn ring. My question is it has blinkers, looks original and isn't the clamp on style. Is this factory? I've never seen one..... rare? Quote
james curl Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Dodge offered factory turn signals in 41, surly by 50 Plymouth had caught up. Quote
addicted2dunes Posted July 26, 2011 Author Report Posted July 26, 2011 Huh, so it's not that rare..... darn..... Quote
Young Ed Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Factory equipment and in 1950 it was still optional. My Dads 51 plymouth convert had aftermarket ones when he got it and its a top of the line model. So I wouldnt exactly call them rare but its a good find for you. Quote
james curl Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Can't say about Plymouth as I do not know when they started offering factory turn signals as an option or standard equipment. Tim Adams may weigh in on the subject after he reads the forum today. My service manual thru the P-20 model year does not show any type of turn signal in the electrical schematic. So you might have a rare part there. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 I will weight in but I might be a bit on the lite side... as best as I can find in the past the 46-48 directional signal were a factory accessory..or to put it more plainly I would guess is that were stick on the column style..factory aftermarket units are a rare bird...Turn signals were a factory option in 1949...as of 1951 I believe was the first built in self cancelling units and they were optional equipment..I think this trend continued through the 55 year..from 56 on I could find no reference to the directional signals so they may have been listed under standard equipment by that time.. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Tim the p15 accessory units were self canceling as were I believe all the 49-52 units. The p15 ones are a little tricky as they only came with one center brake light so if you want 3 brake lights and factory turn signals you have to work some electrical voodoo. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Ed, my P15 BZ CP had the original turn signals but unit was off the car and laying with other parts...I do recall a slot in the column but never gave it much thought as to self canceling set up..will have to investigate a bit further..I do have a stock 51 with turn signals..and the 52 had them also..as for wiring..it is a bit time consuming a wiring involved..but using this switch and having full modern style directionals including 4 way flasher is not a bit hard. Reg Evans Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 My 49 Plym. Suburban has this unit on it. Is this from the factory or added later ? Anybody have a little knob for it ? Quote
martybose Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 My 49 Plym. Suburban has this unit on it. Is this from the factory or added later ?Anybody have a little knob for it ? It's both, because it is the factory accessory that was dealer installed. Marty Quote

See, that one is clamp on style, I've seen those. Mine posted above is not a clamp on, you actually have to dismantle the top of the column to get it off. Just like a newer column. Quote
Reg Evans Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 I have owned and seen a bunch of different clamp on units but never one like this. Part of it actually wraps completely around the column so in order to install it the wheel would have to be removed too. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 For what it's worth; turn signals were mandatory in most states by 1956, meaning they were also probably standard equipment by then. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Anybody have a little knob for it ? Sorry Reg, I dont have a little knob..... Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 For what it's worth; turn signals were mandatory in most states by 1956, meaning they were also probably standard equipment by then. My dad bought a new 1952 Chevy in early 1953 in Indiana and it had turn signals I believe from the factory as my dad was too cheap to buy any dealer installed stuff. This was the one and only new car my dad ever bought in his life. Quote

Reg Evans Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Sorry Reg, I dont have a little knob..... Well now Don....that's strange cause the other night Lisa said just the opposite. Ba Da Boom ! Quote
oldmopar Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Do not have one at this time but over the years have had 2 49 plymouths and 1 49 dodge and as I recall that year had the 1 green light on the dash for signals. If this is a correct then 49 must have at least had the signals as a option Quote
