When the tank is full, the needle goes as far as it can to the right, past the F. I've driven it about 125 miles and the needle is "just" on the left side of F. So, does this mean:

* Float is bad?

* Sending unit is bad?

* Something wrong with the gauge?

I tried a search but did not find anything about trouble shooting tips for the gas gauge. Ideas?

In the Oz 1936-42 workshop manual the way to check your fuel guage is to compare it against a guage that is known to be o/k..........lol.................yeh right after 70yrs.......lol..........sorry can't help tho' both the 40 Dodge & 41 plymouth I have both have guages that read somewhat like yours.......will be interested in any responses............regards, andyd

the entire procedure for testing and schematics are in the repair manual..if you do not own one it should be on top of your list to locate and purchase...the book makes it so easy to understand....I personally have posted these procedures on this forum in the past as have others...but like you, I would have to take time to search what post it was in..

1- Fill tank and do the math (15g. tank I think)

2- check all grounds for sender (not sure if it's a 1 wire or 2)

3- remove sender and inspect float. Accessed through trunk floor

3- when sender is removed and grounded with jumper wire, move float arm throughout its range and see if fuel guage moves.

4- perform these and check back with results.

Thanks for keeping us on track, I would never have thiught of all of those.

It is my preference to do my best to find the answer before I post a question. I would much rather answer a question than ask one. There are few questions that are asked on this forum that have not already not been answered. The search engine is our best friend. I wish more folks would use it.

Especially the misspelled ones.

Well, I guess gage is a word so I shouldn't consider it misspelled. Just not what I would type when thinking about gauges.

Thanks Adam! You've saved me 14 years of reading, culling and pulling my hair out over which post has what I need. You are a Prince amongst men!!

Don,

Sorry to have annoyed you. Given that even you had dozens of searches IMHO not that easy to find specifics some time. Perhaps if there was a listing by category, then the searching wouldn't be unclear. I'm a newbie to the forum and thought that most "like" to answer questions. Again, sorry to have annoyed you.

Well, you could take the easy but not correct way out......simply bend

the needle on the guage gently. It's pretty thin and can be bent toward

either F or E......

We did that to mine, then later discovered it wasn't so far off in the first

place. Ah well....the car now has a bit more gas than the gauge says. :eek:

I, Too am afraid to annoy anyone or spell rong on this forum. Mrs Twink in my 1st grade class scared the hell out of her students to the point they would not participate much in class. She was way too much of a hard *** teacher!

LOL... hmmmm, perhaps not the easy way yet. I'll save the "needle bending" for when harsh language doesn't work!!
