ok, I was ALL happy today to get my rebuild kit for my distributor...BUT it turns out everything (points, condenser, etc.) are all mirrored from the parts I got in my distributor! My distributor also seems to be mirrored from the manuals as well! Also, I seem to be missing a few wires as shown in the parts and shop manuals...anyone have a clue as the what the heck is going on here? Can someone please post s a nice closeup of their distributor interior? I'll call up Gary tomorrow and I'm sure he's gonna groan when my truck turns out to be unique AGAIN!

The condensor I can flip in its bracket but the points?

thanks guys!

Did you give them the dist code when you ordered? I suspect you have parts for the wrong dist #. FYI all that stuff is available locally.

ok, thanks Ed, I'll swing by NAPA next week to annoy my friendly favorite desk girl. I'll bring my distributor to make sure stuff is right.

BUT, still I question why I didn't have the connector wires depicted in the books? Might mine a be a newer replacement? Honestly, this is the first distributor I've touched in 25 years, so I'm a bit outa the loop.

Post the letter code. Should be something like IAT IGS etc. Certainly possible yours is newer or older. Not sure why you don't have the wires in the book. They had different configerations but still had the same basic hookups.

here ya go...and you get to see the nicely cleaned and painted part as well! Where would these wires go?

as on the data tag:

PN 1274066

The only other wire in the dist should be the little grounding pigtail. As far as an IAY dist its not a # I'm familiar with.

WHAT grounding pigtail? There wasn't one in there when I tore it apart for cleaning! I'm sooooo frustrated with this thing!

I'm actually entertaining the PerTronix route...so hidden no one would ever know, but those I tell. Thoughts?

I'll take a look at my dist pile after work. I know there's 3-4 of them in the garage.

As you have learned points for these distributors must match the distributor as not all distributors are configured equally. Even if you convert to an electronic module it still needs to be wired correctly. The ground wire in the picture below is NOT the one the screwdriver is pointing to.

Napa does show an IAY for a 51 1ton. Condensor # ECH AL116, cap ECH AL106, rotor ECH AL107, and I think these are the points ECH CS725A. The points dont list IAY but they do show some of the same other dist #s that the other parts show.

i believe that's the same arrangement of the parts as mine has. no vacuum advance, only mechanical.

AH HA! I did not have a vacuum advance either!

hmmm....PerTronix sounds better and better, assuming they have what I need!

perhaps the grounding pigtail is needed only on the vacuum advance models?

The little grounding wire has a -205 suffix on it. According to the parts list for the 1274066, it doesn't use the grounding wire so you're not supposed to need one. It's not missing anything. The IAY information is important. It used a different cap than some of the others. Used in B3,4Ds only. I'd have to download Sec. 8 of the parts listing again to verify.

whew...thanks guys, I thought I was losing my mind! Would it be "better" to rebuild (is this a good version of the distributor?) or put a different one in/go the electronic route? I've got this one all purdy already!

If everything is tight, go with what you have. It's original. Correction on usage- B3,4Ds only

According to Autolite it uses:#CS725 (AL-93HV) points, AL107 rotor, AL106 cap, AL869 condenser Condenser appears to be universal to distibutoprs used in the Dodge trucks.

Mark I'd use it. Easy enough to change to something later if you don't like it.

yah, going tohit up NAPA over lunch for the "old" parts...that way I'm staying "true" to the resto as well.

thanks for all the help guys!

In all the tune-up kits that I have seen and even purchased I have never seen the small grounding wires included.

If you have a dizzy that uses these very small wires then you need to purchase them seperately.

I do have an Echlin parts manual and also an autolite manual that I have scanned to CD's and this lists all the parts for your cars and trucks.

If you want a copy then write to me with you vehcile information and I will then confirm that this information is in the manual and will let you know the price for the cd.

Information is the key to fixing our old cars and trucks. Go see my older posting onthe Napa and Autolite catalogs that was posted back around the beginning of Feb 2011.
