Anyone have some good pictures of this set up? I think mine had been "played" with as I don't seem to have all the parts shown in the shop manual.

thanks!

as I suspected, I seem to be missing the LARGE spring on the bottom of the brake shoe AND the bolt that sets the depth on the bottom half of the shoe...

Any help guys? If I got teh size of the bolt that's easy....the spring tho...

Yea, I believe that screw is 1/4" by 3 or 4" long, threaded the entire length. Get a 4 incher and cut it to length. The spring might be more difficult. It's fairly stout. I don't recall seeing springs like that at the hardware store. Maybe someone has a spare for you.

ok, thanks on the adjuster bolt...easy peasy then.

I'm gonna have to go thru ALL my parts (including the "replaced" parts tote) in the off chance one of my buddies took that off and didn't label it right. Doubt I'll easily just find that spring!

yep, can't find that spring.....ANYONE have one that I might acquire in some manner?

I'll try and remember to look tomorrow. The trans I've got outside is a 3spd but that piece might be the same. Anyone know?

Ed, from the parts book they all look to be the same, I'd also like that bolt that sets the lower half the shoe if you would be willing to part with it (and have them).

Attached are some pictures of my emergency brake on my 4 speed. I rebuilt it over the summer, and installed it in Sept. As you can see my old truck is fairly dirty underneath, but I am making progress.

Mark here's what I found. Not sure if its right or not. Might be other stuff in the can if I was 100% sure what I was looking for.

rats those are the parts I HAVE...I'm looking for the parts that AREN'T there! :( Thanks for looking....I'd post you a picture of the parts I don't have....oh wait....heh. According to the parts book and shop maunal there should be a larger diameter wire spring as well....maybe 3/16 or 1/4 n thick wire, 1-1.5" tall, clearly visible in Dollydodge's and Merle's first picture's of their set ups.

Ya I see the third spring. What bolt are you missing? It looks like this one has the hook at the top and then it goes down through all 3 springs.

If you look to the right of the middle spring of Dollydodge's second picture, you'll see a bolt that goes through the bottomhalf of the ebrake band. Used to adjust the bottom section for clearance and takes the rattle out of the brake. Without it, the top section will drop down and ride on the drum constantly. It can be made, if not able to be found. You can check on the Ford trucks of the same era if need be. Same trans and brake setup.

Ford.... <shudder>.....

Oh, come on! Iron can't read. It doesn't know what brand it was used on. I've used Ford and Chevy sheet metal to make patch panels on my Dodge truck and so far it's beeen getting along just fine.:D

Here's the only picture I have of my 3spd. Can't tell if it has that extra spring on it. It does seem to have that second bolt so I'll have to go searching again.

if anyone could measure theirs up and tell me:

Wire diameter

number of coils

compression rate (k factor)

uncompressed height

I can research some spring vendors and find replacements.

anyone have one of these, the one I was hoping to get came off in pieces on the guy.

Try a farm equipment dealer or a tractor trailer repair facility. I used to have stuff like that in an odds-and-ends drawer ( several drawers) when I was in the business.

Just got to thinking. You must be getting close to the big "first drive" day and want a backup for those problematic rear brakes!

If anyone does find a source for these springs I hope you post them. I thought it looked like something was wrong with mine so after reading this thread I went out to look (now having seen what they should look like). Sure enough, no fat spring & both the longer springs have pretty much had it. More to add to the list of parts to search for.:(

That makes quite a few of us without that larger bottom spring. I'm thinking maybe there are two different styles of parking brake

well you CAN run the 2 nuts up to the bottom of the e-band and it'd work. I'm thinking I never lost mine and it was never there! I,f from what 49Dodge1ton said about it not budging in a vise, I'd say the pretty much end up being a spacer and either a solid spacer'd work or just run the nuts up.

I just looked at my 52 1/2 ton and there is not a 3rd large spring at the bottom. The E brake works fine. Hmmmmm
