Kustom52Mopar Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 http://stlouis.craigslist.org/pts/2179774127.html Saw this ad that was posted this afternoon, thought I'd share. Looks like it has a floor shifter attatched to it also. Quote
austinsailor Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 thanks. I'm going to look at it in the morning. Quote
austinsailor Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 my plan would be to put that tranny behind a Chrysler 6 in a 42 Plymouth. is this suitable for this use? other than the obvious water inside/siezed type problems, are there other things to look for? I'd assume it needs syncros and other small items for sure. the guy knows nothing of it't history, it was in the backseat of a car he bought. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Look for R10 on the case and it should be good to go. Besides making sure it spins etc. After that I'd put it in and try it. Quote
Alshere59 Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 (edited) Your the one.. LOL I called on it as well. The wiring is easy and is available by search the best advice has been offered. If it looks good lube, spins etc give it a try. The solenoids are a bit pricey but so are overdrives. There are even ways to convert those to cheaper modern versions. R10 is the more popular version but an R7 is good as well. R11's I dont know about as far as fit. Any others have knowledge if those fit? Just giving you some more background as to what numbers to look for. Good luck Edited January 26, 2011 by Alshere59 Quote
austinsailor Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 You must be the guy from NY who called! I might have to call George while I'm there for advice. After all, he's the guy I'd have fix it if it needed it. Quote
Alshere59 Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Nope Dayton. I have a lot of family in Saint Louis tho. Hmm calling George is a good idea but a long conversation.. LOL Quote
austinsailor Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Been there, done that. I understand. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 (edited) Sounds like an R7 if it's a floor shift. Unless that is one of those hard to find shift kits from the 50s or 60s. Edited January 26, 2011 by BobT-47P15 Quote
james49ply Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 floor shifts were top loaders, correct? this one looks to be a side shifter with a floor shift adapter installed. Quote
Harvey Tank Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 you are right. I enlarged the photo and you can see its a floor shift adapter. I cant tell if it an R-10 on not. what ever it is its worth the $$. Quote
suntennis Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 The OD should be a R-10 because it has a governor on the passenger side. The R-7 did not a governor. The governor looks somthing like the solenoid which is on the driver side but is towards the rear of the OD. Quote
1941Rick Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 That is a good buy....I would sell just the transmission for 300. All parts are rebuildable. Quote
austinsailor Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 bought it! it's clean, operates smooth. can't feel any chipped teeth. I'll just bolt it in my 40 Dodge and try it. anyone want an aftermarket floor shift conversion? Quote
Young Ed Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 What are you asking for that floor shift? Quote
austinsailor Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 this is an R10. it has the selenoid and a lever that I believe a cable will go on. is there a diagram of how this hooks up somewhere? Thanks Quote
Alshere59 Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Yep diagram and some other info on Blueskies site here. http://www.50plymouth.com/05-tra/tra.html Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 folks interested in the OD may well be interested in this item also... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1952-1953-1954-1955-DeSoto-Dodge-Plymouth-OD-Relay-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3a628cd8f8QQitemZ250761500920QQptZVintageQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories Quote
austinsailor Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 thanks. I'll probably stick it in my old '40 Dodge tomorrow and see how it does. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 4001 should be the correct part number for that relay. I think 4001A is a replacement for original....so either should be OK> Quote
austinsailor Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Opened up the tranny, it looked new inside. Stuck it in my '40 Dodge sedan this afternoon, it's great! syncros are like new, shifts great and the freewheeling function works fine. I still have to hook up the electrics, but I have no doubt it'll be fine. It was not a bolt in deal, though, as I'd heard. I fought it for a while and just couldn't get it to slip in the clutch. finally pulled it out and found the snout that the throwout bearing rides on was about 1/16" bigger. Swapped them and it went right in. I have questions about the various electrical aspects, but I'll start a thread about that. Quote
Greenbomb Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 austin: You just did what I have to do-change the input shaft due to the pilot bearing surface being in bad shape. I've been leery to do it as I'm wondering how the mixed parts would get along with each other. Do you have any gears howling or such? I know each unit is different due to all sorts of variables, but if you are good to go it will give some encouragement to dive into mine. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 I think he's talking about the input shaft bearing retainer that the throwout bearing rides on being a different diameter, not the input shaft that the clutch rides on. Quote
