moose Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Looking good Fred. For linkage ends like ball joints and clevises I use http://www.midwestcontrol.com/ but this one came up in a search easily http://www.springfix.co.uk/Located in the UK so that's at least a little closer. Quote
greg g Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 I was thinking along the lines of going to the carbs from the stock pivot with a cable. as the way your carbs are located the connection will need to pull the likages toward the front of the car. Unless I'm thinkig backwards. Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted February 18, 2011 Author Report Posted February 18, 2011 moose: thanks! that english joint looks really good, they have everything... AND i can choose between imperial and metric that'll annoy gobi, my master welder, since he can't stand imperial stuff. hehe. greg: a cable would maybe be the easiest way, but i like linkages and i think they are a bit more "period correct", but maybe that's only in my head... it will be crazy enough to sync all three carbs - like i said, i'll be happy if the car runs about as good as before. the starter motor is already at the shop for spooling since i expect starting trouble with cold engine. Quote
greg g Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 Fred, usually a choke on one carb is all that is needed on multiple setups. But with three acc pumps dumping fuel to the ports you may not need one. Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted February 19, 2011 Author Report Posted February 19, 2011 this is directly after the welding. now they have to be cleaned up and sent to alluminium coating. i'll do that on monday after work... though i'd rather do it right now:rolleyes: Quote
Andydodge Posted February 19, 2011 Report Posted February 19, 2011 Fred.......thats one mean looking engine........lol.........hope you paint a couple of Ford V8 signs on the side of the door..................lol.........should rightly stick it up them Frod owners..............great look.......andyd Quote
40plyrod Posted February 19, 2011 Report Posted February 19, 2011 I like it! You'll have to post a video of it when it's running. Quote
Robert Horne Posted February 19, 2011 Report Posted February 19, 2011 this is directly after the welding. now they have to be cleaned up and sent to alluminium coating. i'll do that on monday after work... though i'd rather do it right now:rolleyes: Good job Cpt.Fred. Here is photo of a flathead with headers. Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted February 20, 2011 Author Report Posted February 20, 2011 Andy: yeah, sure hope so as well... but i guess this will be a sync and tune nightmare first... although we're having the oxigen sensors. and to be honest i think it will not be too noticable without cam regrind and head job. let's see! hope you're fine over there! thanks, 40plyrod and Robert Horne! but i must underline here that i did not do the welding myself, i'm just doing what we call the "Igor" part here:D the metalwork is done by my good friend and club president Gobi here in Kreuzberg, Berlin. his shop is my favorite playground... it's great fun and i really can't wait to hear it roar again. it's been too long since the last cruise around the block! tomorrow i'll clean up everything and we found a place selling the parts we need for the linkage. just around the corner, i can cycle there. ha! video will be uploaded as soon as it lives again! fred Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted February 25, 2011 Author Report Posted February 25, 2011 i cleaned the welds on headers and intake and gobi painted the headers with a high temp coating. since they will be wrapped in heat tape anyway i didn't waste too much time on them, but the intake came out quite nice and i will burnish it tomorrow. getting closer! fred Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted March 1, 2011 Author Report Posted March 1, 2011 intake cleaned and burnished, headers coated and wrapped in heat tape. the carbs are at the customs office, i'll fetch them tomorrow and give them to the cleaner right away. the ball joints and other material for he linkage should be here tomorrow, too. i still don't know what style aircleaner i'm going to use... fred Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 I can't wait to hear it run! Good job, Fred! Tom Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted March 13, 2011 Author Report Posted March 13, 2011 a little update on the linkage... yesterday i finally got the carbs back from cleaning and i quickly put them together for mock up purposes and building the linkage. afterwards i'll take them apart again and finish some details and clean all threads, and will supply them with new gaskets. here's what the linkage looks like now: the choke valves of the first 2 carbs are connected to the 3rd one with clamps we made out of short tube sections, small set screws will be added. the 3rd carb keeps the standard choke cable. the throttle linkage is made from ball couplings normally used in large R/C car suspensions. again the 3rd carb is used as "master" and the other 2 as "slaves". i filed down the throttle lever to make room for a 2nd lever we built from scratch: this is of course work in progress... and i'm not that good with a file, i admit. ...BUT it works fine and that's that:rolleyes: the standard pivot point on the block will be used, only without the direction change, since we flipped the carbs 90°. hand throttle and all other features will stay that way, that was important to me. i might even have room for the wire loom... i really, really want to finish this! temperature keeps climbing...nice and sunny... fred Quote
oldodge41 Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Great job! I am very impressed with your craftsmanship. Can't wait to hear how it runs..........Tim Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted March 13, 2011 Author Report Posted March 13, 2011 thanks tim, but i have to repeat i did not build this myself, most of the work was done by this fine gentleman here: my friend Gobi, who is an excellent welder and metal worker, painter, taylor, guitar builder, original member of the Misanthropes Car Club and a very close friend. here you can see some of his other work and his car: http://www.stabil-berlin.de/pobeda/ i'll pass on your compliment! fred Quote
40plyrod Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Glad to hear the builds still moving along, looks great. Checked out the link, talented guy. I can't read any of it but it looks good what kind of car is he building there? Quote
Alshere59 Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Is that a Russian Volga he is working on? Quote

Cpt.Fred Posted March 25, 2011 Author Report Posted March 25, 2011 (edited) It finally went in! i had to cut the 2 long manifold bolts down to the size of the others, luckily both of them came right out after a little heating. this car is a miracle... i didn't break one thing yet (ok, 2 screws of the service panel over the tranny). after that it all went straight in - tight fit, but looks nice and snug. now i take the carbs apart again and put in new gaskets... linkage is already working, just needs a little adjustment. greg g Posted March 26, 2011 Report Posted March 26, 2011 Fred, You might need this as you proceed, just add the 3rd carb in to the mix. http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Dual1barrelcarbs.htm Quote
