jimwheeldon Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 Does anyone know if you can put the more streamlined 51 or 52 hood on a 1950 Plymouth business coupe? I'm going to pick up my "new" '50 Plymouth next week...I can't wait! Oh ...this is my first post ..I love the site, And here I thought I was wierd for lovin' 40's and 50's Mopars! Thanks all-Jim:) Quote
Normspeed Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 Hi Jim, I don't have direct experience with those but my Hollander book says all the 50s use the same hood and it's a different exchange number from the 49s, and the 51-52s. Maybe someone else will know exactly what the difference is and whether a hammer and torch might finesse one to fit your 50. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 the width, front and rear. slope and such is radically different..would be a very extreme method for getting a sloped hood..I have owned a few 49's and still have a couple 51/52's..sorry but the 49/50 hood design with the peak is in my book a superior look and I would retro fit except again, the above metioned differences. The 51/52 have a sad sack appearence in the grill..their biggest drawback to ownership..definitely not stylish...these two years are an ownership of nostalgia more than for looks. Quote
jimwheeldon Posted March 16, 2007 Author Report Posted March 16, 2007 After a little more research I realized how big a difference there is in the 51 - 52 cars. I never really looked at them before...i was pretty fixated on the 50 i'm buying. I do agree the 50 is probably the most attractive body style to me. I think I'll just keep her stock cosmetic wise, and just concentrate on tweaking out the 218. Quote
Guest 50Plymouth Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 A month or two ago there was a thread I started titled "who put a p23 front clip on my p20" or something similar. In it I was informed my 1950 Plymouth 2dr. has a '51 or '52 front clip. They thought doors, fenders, hood were changed. At first I wanted to find the correct '50 hood but didn't yet figure what all was done to make the '50 parts fit and then actually find them nearby. Hope this helps somehow. Remember you'll need a lot more than the hood to change, just like I would. Ryan Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 to repeat myself..the 49/50 is the better looking front end of the four years that basic shaped body was made..the 49 bing the most narrown in wheelbase and the fancier front grille due to mainly the mass amount of trim. Ah the 50..its grill is very smart looking and is evidence that little is indeed much..I have a rod-approach idea for grille to the 51/52 that I am not ready to discuss as I have not taken my spare clip yet and tweaked it any..even the 53 and especially the 54 model has it all over the 51/52 Sad Sack look..its these very difference that keep each model alive and with their own following. I probably would not own a 51/52 except for my father having them when I was a child..plus it and myself coming into the world about the same time. So them being ugly I did get a Clup Coupe and the Suburban..both two door models..that alone gives them some social redeeming qualities. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 Tim I think I'm the same way with the 51-52s. There hasn't been 1 second of my life when Dad hasn't owned at least one p23. He's had his convert since 66 and for quite a while had 2 converts! Plus numerous other 50 51 and 52 mopars. I'm thinking that a 51-52 would look pretty cool if you just floated the center bar somehow. Ideas? Anyone seen it done? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 The three big teeth and the middle bar and that forever frown is detracting...I liked the ealier lower hood trim with the plastic letter but they are in most part found only in very rough shape..lending the later stlye to be more popular. these cars do not have a great following..not much has been doen to them that I have seen..not to say it has not..just not aware is my statement. Ed..contact me off line we discuss a few things about the opening that I think may lend a better overall look..but then..beauty is only in the eye of the beholder... Quote
Young Ed Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 Here's one custom look for a 51-52. And I've thought of maybe putting a dodge grill/clip in mine too. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 that yellow thing is just too brash, looks more like a cartoon than a car...would have to be a little more subtle..maybe two center teeth on the outsides and one outside in the middle would at least make it look like it was smiling...I hate say this but the design team was asleep those two years...across the entire Chrysler lineup.. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 Oh but Tim that yellow convert can be yours for the small sum of 70K! I will give it credit for having a mopar small block with a 6pack. I forget if its a 340 or 360 though. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 not my style of eye candy..will pass on the deal..lol this is my yellow convertible..it is V8 4bbl..not stock ..chops really nice at idle..shaker should I say..little smaller... Quote
Charlie Olson Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 We all would think you were wierd if you didn't love old MoPars. Who wants to be part of the herd??? Welcome aboard. Charlie in AZ Quote
fredsv8shop Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 What is wrong with a '50 bizz coupe 's hood ?? http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/fredsv8shop/Hasselt%202006/ Quote
Niel Hoback Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 That coupe's hook seems to have a rather unique method of holding it down. Mine is a cable operated latch, I wonder how that one operates. I volunteer to make some "operational tests". Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 not knowing if this is a wife or girlfriend I will keep my mouth shut...but I will say that ornament is off center... Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 this was my club coupe... I kept the seat covers in the back seat...these cars had lots of head room... Don..notice the lift bay had not been built at this time..sold this car shortly after it was completed... Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 Does look a bit different without the lift addition. I remember when you built it as you were doing all that wining about building the tall cealing;) Must have been worth it. Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 This 49 Plymouth my dad was driving in this picture was a loner car from the repair shop my dad used. Dad later bought this same car for me when I was 13-14 years old. Paid thirty five dollars for it. I used it as a field racer until the engine died. I tore it down but never put it back together. When we moved fron the place we lived I had to pay a boneyard fifteen bucks to haul it off. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 That was during one heck of a heat wave..and yes the tall walls sure put a twist to building..I still give thanks my bud uptown had all that scaffold he lent me to do the work..without it I ould have been toast..and yes by all mean it IS worth all the blood (yes injuries incurred) sweat and tears (bright light and salt in your eyes) I sure would love to have another group gathering at my place again this year...my orchard never looked better than with all them old Mopes in the yard... Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 I agree Tim; That day was sure a lot of fun. Good food and good friends. Life does not get any better. Next one Richie will have to drive his Hudson. Have you heard from him and has he replaced the wet clutch yet? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 17, 2007 Report Posted March 17, 2007 No update on the clutch..he wrote and said that was one of the first things on his of of "to do" have gotten a few forwarded comics and items of political interest..so I guess I need to drop him a personal note and see what be going on with him. I just returned from eating at the Menonite Restaurant..best food for the money...no dishes to wash either..mums likes that part. Now I am going to go bake a couple raisen pies...yes raisen...they are delicious and a northern treat...or maybe it was just applachia..etiher way I like em... Quote
Brendan D25 Posted March 17, 2007 Report Posted March 17, 2007 Tim, in another post you mentioned that the color on your taxi is from VW. what year or paint # or brand did you use? It looks close to the color on my D25, which is supposed to be a VW color done about thirty years ago. Brendan. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 17, 2007 Report Posted March 17, 2007 The taxi picture is at my place but car belongs to Lou...yes I think he said it is a VW blue.. Quote
