Anyone know what the max RPM's for a stock 218 is ?

I've seen a factory BHP vs RPM curve that, if I recall correctly, went up to 4200 RPM.

How much damage was being done to the engine, I can't say, but if they were testing up to that RPM they probably expected it to hold together at least for the test.

I have a Jaguar tach on mine. It is a 12v neg ground unit and I am running it on my 6v pos ground system. I have it isolated from the ground, and use a 4AA battery pack on the power wire. Positive from the 6v pack to the tach, negative to the ground of the car. The ground from the tach goes to the negative battery post.

The rebuilt '51 218 in my car has turned right up around 4300 under load. I'm scared to rev it too high otherwise. Also it has been pointed out that the ring groove in an engine that hasn't been rebuilt will crack the top ring of the pistons. All six of them in the case of my A...

This 6 volt tach was a B-Day gift from my wife. I haven't installed it yet cause I can't decide which of my beaters to install it in.

I bought this 6 volt tach from Powerhouse, does anyone know where the wires hook up? The red and white are connected together and marked as ground, the green is marked coil and the second white wire and the black wire are unmarked. He changed over to 12 volts a little while ago and forgot where the wires go.

I think one was hot/neg(black) and one was light(white)...which never worked since I got it.

REG EVANS, if you are out there...can you check the wiring diagram for yours? it's the same kind. Thanks.

Maybe call tachshack or gauge guys as his packaging displays....

I repainted the tach that I got from Powerhouse today and also Installed it, I still have to hook up the wiring but I think it makes a nice addition and will help with tuning and monitoring the engine.

Not sure what I am doing wrong but I have tried every combination with the wiring and hooking it up. I had the red and white hooked up to ground and the black to power, the red and white to power and the black to ground. The green wire is going to the NEG terminal on the coil and I have also tried the POS side with no luck. The single white wire is is for the light, does that need to be hooked up for the gauge work? I don't think so? Any ideas? Any way to test the gauge?

I'm not familiar with this particular make of tach. But I have installed tachs on 6volt pos ground vehicles. From following Reg's instructions,I believe it should be installed as follows:

Black - to chassis ground

Green - to distributor

Red - to ignition switch side of coil (I would use an inline fuse)

White -to dash light (switched)

White -to chassis ground

If all your connections are good using these connections and the tach doesn't work, the tach may be defective.(The white wire connections are optional and are not required for the tach to work)

I'm not sure if the gauge is working correctly, at idle with the internal switch on 6 cylinder it is at around 250 RPM. If I switch it to 4 Cylinder it jumps up to around 500 RPM which seems correct. When I step on the gas it will only go up to 1500 RPM?? You can see in the above video what I am talking about . Any suggestions? Is there a adjustment pot internal? When I get some time I will check.
