dynaflash_8
Well i just made it back from the East vs. West flathead reliability run. 12 hours, 350 miles, and one motor down. My flathead started rattling on snowqualmie pass heading over, and kept getting worse and worse. Im tearing it down to find out more. Pics coming! The noise is the sound related to a rod knock and/or a spun bearing. Fun times!
TodFitch
Oh im pretty sure i know what the noise is. The noise is the sound related to a rod knock and/or a spun bearing. Fun times! Ouch! I hope it is not that bad. Just did about 470 miles today in my 1933 fortunately it was running as quietly at the end of the day as at the beginning. dynaflash_8
yea, so i just pulled the pan. Not good. Half inch of metal paste in the bottom. Spun 4 rod bearings. Looks like they lost oil to em Seized to the crank after digging in, then tore the hell out of the rods. Guess its time to drop the insurace on it. Dodgeb4ya
Seems like there is more and more people having bottom end failures after what most say was a very careful rebuild. I'm beginning to think the bearings might be of poor quality-maybe being manufactured offshore-possibly China? I've done lots of these engines and never had a failure-but have done none in the last 10 years. This problem is kinda scaring me now as I've got a 8 cylinder engine to do a complete rebuild on and am afraid of the parts I might end up with. Sorry to see your sad ending.... Joe Flanagan
Does anyone have recommendations for good quality bearings? Sounds like something we all ought to know about.
dynaflash_8
Does anyone have recommendations for good quality bearings? Sounds like something we all ought to know about. i ordered mine from Rock-auto. They came in a white box. Everything went together correct and everthing platigauged correctly and was torqued correctly. Even had the correct amount of drag on the crank. I looks like it lost oil pressure to the botton end, but the gauge read 40 pounds. All i know is that these fuckers cost me a 6k motor. PatrickG
I'll have to do some digging next weekend when I am at my parents house to to find the actual part numbers, but the bearings in my motor are Clevite's, the tri-metal ones I believe. supplied by the machine shop that reconditioned the crank and rods. TodFitch
How are the main bearings? If the mains were getting oil but not the rods it would imply that the flow through the crank was a problem. Drilled passages clear? If the mains also look like they did not have sufficient lubrication then maybe an issue with the galleys in the block?

greg g
Please do edit your post, this unlike the HAMb is a family rated site. If you feel you needn't address that, it is likely that the whole thread will be deleted.
PatrickG
Clevite also has a really good bearing analysis page with just about every cause of bearing failure and pictures and explanation of each case, so you can compare your bearings to find out what may have gone wrong. http://catalog.mahleclevite.com/bearing/
Dodgeb4ya
I have always trusted Clevite's. White box stuff-who knows where it came from... Seeing way too much of that no name White reboxed crap!
BobT-47P15
An item in a plain white box with no manufacture information reminds me of stuff you buy at some stores which says on the label "Distributed by XXXX Stores". Tells nothing about who made the item or where. My thought about that is - it's probably the cheapest thing they can buy and are just trying to make it sound like higher quality by attaching their name. May or may not be true in the bearing industry. Just my .
