Juday1951 Posted March 24, 2010 Report Posted March 24, 2010 (edited) Ok, so in my never ending quest to find the OEM wheels for this truck (which I hope will end soon), I need to know the color of the wheels on the 1951 B3B. I've seen them painted in a lighter shade of yellow and I've also seen them painted the same color as the body. I'm sure someone on here has an idea of what color they were (and what size) from factory. Any information is much appreciated! *Note that I have the original spare wheel and tire on the back of the truck. The wheel measures 16" and the tire states 16x6.50. Oddly enough, the spare tire is painted black..... Thank you, Kevin Edited March 24, 2010 by Juday1951 Quote
Merle Coggins Posted March 24, 2010 Report Posted March 24, 2010 The standard wheel color for your truck would be the Dodge Truck Cream with black being an option. The yellow/cream color started in mid 1950, according to Don Bunn's book. Before that all wheels were black. Your 1/2 ton truck should have 16" wheels with a 4.5" bolt pattern. I'm sure someone here has a few for you. Merle Quote
OLD DODGE Posted March 24, 2010 Report Posted March 24, 2010 If you haven't seen this yet the T137 site has the paint colors and combinations for the B and the B3 series. http://www.t137.com/colorchips/index.html These are the factory colors and descriptions for each year. Quote
Zeke1953 Posted March 24, 2010 Report Posted March 24, 2010 I have the paint formula for the Sun Lemon Yellow wheel color which I got on this forum several years ago. It's a perfect match. If you want, I can dig it out and post it again. Zeke Quote
Jim Gaspard Posted March 24, 2010 Report Posted March 24, 2010 This is a good thread on the subject of Pilothouse B3 wheel colors and other options. It has Zeke's formula. http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=9386&highlight=wheel+paint+color Quote

Dan Babb Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 While probably not a perfect match, at Tractor Supply, I bought a can of spray paint that looks pretty good. I think the color is called Cub Cadet Beige and gave the wheel a bit of a cream colored look. 2 Quote
HanksB3B Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 I think this truck is an example of a faily well kept, unrestored original vehicle. I do wonder if the pinstripes are the way it was back in the day and would be interested in hearing about that. Hope this helps: http://rides.webshots.com/album/576651378jktWgC?start=12 Hank Quote
Reg Evans Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 What a really nice original truck. It looks like it still has the original and not rotted out bed wood. I've never seen pin stripes on a truck wheel though. If your truck is any color but Armour Yellow I would go with the original light yellow rims. If it's Armour Yeller like mine black looks much better to my eye. Quote
Juday1951 Posted March 25, 2010 Author Report Posted March 25, 2010 I can't express how happy I am to finally find out the answer to this and more answers to questions I was about to ask! The knowledge and information on this forum is great! Thank you VERY much. Kevin BTW, here are a few pictures of my truck. You think the yellow wheels would look better? Quote
Reg Evans Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 Nice truck ! Don't see too many all black trucks like yours. I like it the way it is but just for fun here's another black one with a different wheel treatment. Quote
HanksB3B Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 It almost looks like black / purple in the first pic. What size are the chrome wheels and tire size? Are changing wheels ? Hank Quote
Merle Coggins Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 SWEET!!! Keep the chromies, unless you really want an original look. Quote
Juday1951 Posted March 25, 2010 Author Report Posted March 25, 2010 I'm really going for the original look. The wheels that are on there now are 15". I'm looking to get the original wheels, along with some nice tires (maybe bias ply, I don't know). As far as the tire size, I want to say 235/75R15, but I don't remember off the top of my head... 4852dodge Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 The inside of the rims from one of my 1 tons are that color yellow. It looks to be factory applied. I like the pinstriping. Quote

HanksB3B Posted March 26, 2010 Report Posted March 26, 2010 (edited) I have two original wheels that I had sandblasted and put away. I'm not sure what happened to the other two (maybe they were not worth saving) I found the ones I have now at a swap meet and bought them for $10ea. They allowed me to put larger tubeless tires on which everyone knows is the poor mans suspension / differential upgrade. In 2005 there was a lot of money changing hands as the truck was being restored and as I had a pile of parts going to the sanblaster and the powder coater I figure throwing them into the mix would be once again the cheapest way to get rolling. The guys at Alvins Autobody liked the way they turned out and the overall look. One of them suggested a green pinstripe would look great and I have to agree. The thing of it is this: I'd love to have the look of the original wheels but for me they're too darn skinny. My Michelin 235/75/R15s give a real good ride and do make up for solid axle dynamics somewhat. If I had my choice, there are companies out there that manufacture new steel wheels with an improved bead and WIDER. I'd love to have yellow wheels and original hub caps (which I WISH someone would retro-re-manufacture). Until then I probably be riding on my 70's generation "hot-rod-wheels". Whatever you do, do it in the spirit of the beauty of your truck. Would like to see whats under the hood, so post more pics o.k. Hank Edited April 25, 2011 by HanksB3B Quote
Reg Evans Posted March 26, 2010 Report Posted March 26, 2010 Hank, How wide is the tread on your tires where it meets the road ? I have stock 15" truck rims on mine with the hub cap clips. The tires are FEDERAL M&S 30X9.5 R15 LT and the tread width where it hits the road is about 8". I'm not a fan of the skinny tire look on these trucks either. One of these days I'll repaint my rims black so I can install the stock hub caps again. Quote
Juday1951 Posted May 12, 2010 Author Report Posted May 12, 2010 Nice looking truck! How close are you to original? I think I see the "Ram" painted black and a single exhaust. 48D It has been converted over to a 12V system. The Ram on the hood is painted black, but I plan on picking up a chrome version of the Ram and replacing the ornament on there now. In the pictures I've posted, the truck has dual exhaust, but not anymore. About the second day of ownership, I took it down to my local muffler shop and had a single side exit pipe/muffler built. As far as pictures under the hood, it still has the original flathead 6 under there and it runs like a pickle seeder. I don't have any plans of replacing it with a V8, or anything like that. I just enjoy the truck too much the way it is to change anything on it. Thanks Kevin Quote
Monkey Truck Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 The info is also on the DPETCA site:http://dodgepilothouseclub.org/know/color/imgcol/_00008.htm http://dodgepilothouseclub.org/know/color/imgcol/ Is the red color painted inside the horns of the ram head on the hood, on the front "Dodge" badge and the details on the hub caps the same red that's listed on the color chart, or is that a different red? Juday1951 Posted June 17, 2010 Author Report Posted June 17, 2010 Update: Thanks to redhed70 here for the original 16" wheels, I've had them sandblasted and painted "Dodge Truck Cream" (according to Mr. Don Bunn's paint code). The hardest part was finding a shop who uses DuPont paint around here to mix and spray them. So, thank you to all who helped me in getting this right! Kevin P.S. The 650-16 tires are on their way. I ordered the STA Super Traxion tires for the rear and the STA Super Transport for the fronts (including tubes for all four). Pictures will follow once I get everything put together... Quote
pflaming Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 What a difference in two black trucks. Each has its own 'taste'. For me Kevin's truck looks sleek, long, and low and I like the look. Different wheels might well change that. I would try original black wheels, caps, and luxuary rings. The original color of my truck was a nice deep blue, the wheels, a light gray color. I think "Moxie" is a Maine drink, is the Moxie a Maine truck? Quote

ggdad1951 Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 (edited) well, I got my wheels back. One of the few things that went well this weekend! Was odd bringing parts BACK to the farm to get cleaned painted and assembled in the home town! Edited April 25, 2011 by ggdad1951 Quote
MBF Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 GGDAD-looks good. What size are the tires? Mike Quote
