After getting frustrated with trying to locate the elusive passenger side mirror bracket for my '49,I made an attempt (with help) at a fabrication. This became a project for myself, a professor and his students and to be honest,I really couldn't have done this without the great shop and expertise available.

1...Drew a template of the back of an existing mirror bracket and then simply turned it over for the opposite effect.

2...Then made another template of the sides and attached with tape and redrew a new template. Here we were able to cut out a working piece of sheet metal.

3...Next,using the cardboard template,it was time to make a die in order to have something to bang on.

4...Once the die was cut and formed,we placed the sheet metal on top and began to bang away.

Really enjoyed seeing it all taking shape. All I should have to do now is drill a few holes, paint and see how it mounts in place.

get the plans to a local VO-TEC and have them make them for projects and sell them for funding!

Has anyone heard if the finished bracket came out OK or works??

Yes,I have finished the mirror bracket.Have had it painted except for the mirror and is now mounted on the truck.I'll take some pics tomorrow.

Here are some pics of the installed RH mirror bracket.Still needs a little paint touch up on nuts/bolts etc.It works just fine except the only problem is that the 5"mirror is to small and is difficult to see objects without leaning to the right a bit while driving. But hey, that's part of the fun.I could go with larger mirrors but I would like to keep the truck as original as possible. So,if anyone is interested in mass producing these and has the tools/expertise,I'll gladly lend the dye mould and roughly drawn templates.

Looks good, but how useful is the mirror? It looks to be a bit low to be able to see it well from the left side. I've often thought about that. If I'm sitting on the right side of my truck and look over to the driver's side mirror I can't see much of it.

You're right Merle,it is a little bit of a strain to see whats happening from the drivers side with that 5"mirror as well as it's position. But I think with a little modification and maybe a bit larger mirror, the rear vision would be a lot better.I kinda like it as is,but that's just by choice.

And John, the only drawings are what you see on the original post...ie cardboard cutouts.I can scan them and send them to you if you like.I'm working on finding someone that will punch out a few if these...I'll keep you posted.

This paint colour has been around since the early 50's and if you don't mind me using the "F" word....it's called Sheridan Blue originally used by Ford.Any of your good paint shops will have the mixing codes. If you can't find the code,I'll get it from my paint guy and send it out to you...good luck mate.

My old 50 PH has a different style mirror, and originally it just had the driver side. I saw one of the complete mirrors like mine on Ebay and bid on it until it went way out of my range. So I fnally fabricated a new mount for the passenger side last summer, I copied the driver side parts. I had the old mirror that came off the passenger side that was screwed into the door, and I used some of those parts for the new mirror. I mad a longer extention part to match the driver side dimensions. It took a bit to get the mirror adjusted so it works on the passenger side (and isn't bumped by the vent window when open), but it works great now. Picture 31 is the driver door mirror, 34 is the parts for the passenger mirror, 148 is the passenger mirror installed.

work on the Patina of the passenger side mirror!

Nice job! Not sure if they are still available but one day what looked like a fairly recent jeep pulled up next to me and I noticed that the arms of the mirror looked pretty identical to our old trucks.

patina?......:) It still looks like rust to me:D

It is funny you mention the jeep mirrors; the old mirror that was on the passenger side was an old jeep mirror that a neighbor put on my truck in about 1969. The arm was a little shorter so I made a longer one. Napa has new mirror style, that is almost identical to the old one, I just decided to make my own. I kind of like keeping as much of the old parts on the truck as I can. They have been there for so long.
