ptwothree Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 Hello all. first post. I Just aquirred a '52 Ply Cranbrook from the local high school auto shop I have been eyeing for a while. The wife made it a present. So, both are obviously keepers. I have a shop manual in the works. Questions: 1. What was the original battery size (group #)? 2. This one has the 'throw away' oil filter. How difficult will it be to find a filter with a replaceable cartridge? Is this block adaptable to a full flow setup? 3. The three on the tree shifter shifts like it's lubed with tar....anyone have experience with freeing this up. 4. How can I get 40's and 50's music to play through the stock 6 volt pos. grd. radio?? Note: This car will remain 6 volt with a 6 volt alternator as an upgrade. GREAT SITE!!!! More later.....got to go pet my Plymouth............ Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 Groupe 1 I believe 6 volt positive ground The throw aways are getting difficult and expensive..suggest you advertise on parts wanted for a cannister style..these filters are still available from a number of sources check all your linkage for dried/contaminated lubricant...do inspect the transmission shift levers for free movement..if car has sat could be dry bushings on the tranny housing..these are splash lubed internal.. the 6 volt positve alternator is quite expensive..keeping the original working radio is great..purchase a transmitter that you feeds your i-pod/external source into that will then allow the radio to detect the AM signal on a preselected bandwidth.. Jim Saraceno Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 I'm not sure about the other three but if your canister looks similar to this: You probably need a NAPA FIL 1080 replaceable filter. There has been many discussion about full flow vs. bypass. Some think one is better, others think the other is better. You can change it over to a full flow system but there is little reason to. If this car is new to you this should be WAY down the line on your priority list. Quote

RobertKB Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 (edited) Hello all. first post. More later.....got to go pet my Plymouth............ Welcome to one of the best sites on the WWW. Sounds like you have a couple of keepers there. 1. I have always used Group 2 batteries in my three old Mopars. 2. I would pick up a canister that takes the replaceable cartridges as mentioned by Jim. 3. As Tim mentioned. 4. Not sure but I believe it has been done using a mix of the old radio and new technology. Good luck with the project! Edited January 21, 2010 by RobertKB Quote
JerseyHarold Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 Welcome aboard!! You made a great choice of cars (I'm a little biased...I have a '51 and a '52). Where do you live? I think a Group 1 battery is the only size that fits the tray in the Plymouth. Quote
p24-1953 Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 look at some of my older post and you can see how to hard wire a ipod into the exg. 6v radio. easy to do and works great. i say keep the 6 volt. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Welcome to the club, ptwothree. You won't find a better site. Lots of knowlegeable people here to help. Would like to see pics when you get a chance. Tom Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Robert got a question about your generator? Why is there not a cover over the generator brushes? Beside that your engine compartment looks great! I painted my block all black and the only problem I have is that where the plugs sit they tend to rust up on the top area. Jon:cool: Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 (edited) I use a larger than normal six volt battery for my Dodge partly because the normal size cost so much I decided just to upgrade and install a larger battery for more cranking power. Oh yes those extra batterys power up my CD player for my40's and 50's music-Power is the name for me!!!! Edited January 17, 2010 by JIPJOBXX Quote

ptwothree Posted January 21, 2010 Author Report Posted January 21, 2010 Thanks for the great input. I have since acquired a shop manual and that is answering a lot more. I'm thinking of ditching the stock throw away oil filter till I can score something better....yes? No? Got a lot of things to sort out on the old girl, and with a little help from you folks on this forum, we will make it happen. Hoping to drive her to the Portland meet this June. BTB....I'm about 15 miles n/e of Sacramento....... Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 maybe you could do like a mechanic I observed while on on a business trip to the middle east..the guy was doing an oil change on a 7 series BMW..I stood by and watched as the man flushed the filter many time in a large can of gasoline and blow it with compressed air and re-install...personally I do not recommend this.. Jim Saraceno Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Jim, you are leaking anti-freeze. Hope it's an old picture. Yes, that's an old picture. That leak is long gone. Why is there not a cover over the generator brushes? It didn't come with one and I never knew it was supposed to have one. Quote
