DanOlson Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 I know the purists cringe at the thought if it but the T5 is now resting comfortable behind the 218. The attached pic was taken during a test fit to check clearances etc. I'll do a write up soon with pics and part numbers before I forget everything. The truck is on a trailer covered with covers and lots-o-snow. We typically get a January thaw so I'll wait for that to get it in the garage and put the motor/tranny back in. Dan Olson Quote
Dennis_MN Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 It's looking good, longer than I imagined. I was wondering if any one thought about building a wheel just ahead of the U-joint which would serve as a parking brake. It would take a little cabling to adapt the 53 style e-brake lever. Have you given this any thought or with the new rear end you already have e-brakes built in? Dennis Quote
DanOlson Posted December 28, 2009 Author Report Posted December 28, 2009 Right now the plan is to use the e-brake in the 9 inch. I've seen a couple of cable kits that look promising. I have the under dash pull out handle that I hope to maintain. Dan Quote
greg g Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 I need to make up some e brake cables for my Studebaker project. What "kits" did you find? I looked a Speedway, but thought they were charging an awful lot for some cable and hardware. Quote
Young Ed Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 Dan did you have to have the clutch disk flipped or were you able to use an ordinary chevy one? Quote
DanOlson Posted December 28, 2009 Author Report Posted December 28, 2009 Ed, I used the GMC Safari one. http://napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?R=NCLRCF4212_0233837785 Dan Quote

Young Ed Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 Dan thats good to know. I've got a great looking clutch disk that came with the T5. So it sounds like I can use it if it matches the diameter of my pressure plate Quote
lugnut123 Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 what did you get the tranny out of??? S-10 chevy maybe? thanks Quote
DanOlson Posted December 30, 2009 Author Report Posted December 30, 2009 The T5 is a 1352-145 GM 1985-86 S-Truck 2.5 L4-2.8 V6 Dan Quote
MMcKinney Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Try looking at Helmar INC. for your e-brake cables. I feel the Lokar & Speedway parts are expensive and not much selection to choose from. I am hoping to build an E brake system to the installed ford 9 inch from the orginal 1953 B4B hand brake and getting the correct fitting cable to start with will solve many problems. Helmar INC (http://www.helmarparts.com/Emergency_Brake_Cables_s/64.htm) I actually need to call them to check the size of the cable with the round ball on the end, but if you look through the many photos you will see something that will work. Yes, you will have to build you own brackets and mounts, but just getting the right cable and the right lentgh will make things much easier. Look at the parts #1460794 & #1460795. They have the round ball end and a usable eye bolt end in which you can dream up some kind of bracket to attach to any style of differential e-brake cables. Helmar also has many of other types of creative parts that a fabricator can utilize. Check it out MMcKinney Caldwell, ID Quote
DanOlson Posted December 30, 2009 Author Report Posted December 30, 2009 Good info and the price is sure right. Thanks, Dan Quote
1937 Dodge Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 (edited) I still have to figure out an emergency brake system for mine too. Your install looks great! Interested to know what gear ratios you are using in the T-5 (ou probably kept the original gearing on the T-5) and in your rear end? Tire size? Mine was sure easier to put in with the cab and bed off, Had to slightly modify the center frame brace to clear the top of the T5 shaft and the side speedometer cable. Switched to a short throw shifter to give me a little more room in the drivers cab. Keep us updated on your progress. 92b0c46e3443e4c5440ecc724d06ee2ef2cdb2d2782a186c84b79f9225d965f6 Edited December 30, 2009 by 1937 Dodge typos Quote
Young Ed Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 That picture right there is whats really got me worried about my T5 swap. What year truck frame is that? Quote
4852dodge Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 Try looking under a modern pickup. the big three use 2 cables to one. There is a stamped piece that the rear cables hook into and the single cable pulls on. There are several styles used, I'm sure one will work for you. I will be using a 8 3/4 rear in my truck and the bracket from a Barracuda. Quote
Jim Shepard Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 So Dan, this thing just bolts right up to the bell housing with no mods? Quote
DanOlson Posted January 1, 2010 Author Report Posted January 1, 2010 It doesn't just bolt up. The bellhousing needs to be drilled and tapped. In my case two existing holes had to be filled in and re-drilled and tapped. Dan Quote
Young Ed Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 I started a thread for my own t5 project http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=19419 Quote
1937 Dodge Posted January 11, 2010 Report Posted January 11, 2010 My frame is from a 1937 Dodge MC Quote
DanOlson Posted January 18, 2010 Author Report Posted January 18, 2010 I just couldn't stand it any longer, so I put the 218 back in the 53. Now I can get the driveshaft fitted. I attached a photo that shows how the T5 sits. It's about 7 1/2 inches from the center of the shifter to the seat riser. Go Vikings! Dan Quote
